Hey everyone im a long user of this site, but sadly new member...:p

I just started thinking of making my own addons(Arma 2, Arma 2 OA), I know its no easy task but im willing to get started :).
my questions are:-
1)I want to make a soldier and add a custom made skin (by me) and give him a certain gear.
2)Id like to make a skin for a jet (for my own personal use only, I'll even ask the author of the addon if I can).

so yeah Ive already downloaded the BI Edit kit 2 and there are some stuff which I dont know if they are working right or not so, what im asking if there is someone who has a free time atleast to give me the steps on how to achieve my goals it would be greatly appreciated! :D

~Many Thanks

hi, check these links:
http://www.armaholic.com/plug.php?e=faq&cid=9

for custom units you can unpbo the arma2 / oa files and then find the textures to use as a template. without any addon editing you can use your new textures in missions with setobjecttexture. for reskinning for an addon, you should search for "hex editing" (hex editor) to change the texture paths of binarized BIS models so you can repack them into your addon.

2. if you have the mlod (unbinarized) version you can open the model in O2 and use the tool>mass texture renaming to point it to the new texture you made. or setobject texture should work. or just edit the existing textures without changing anynames and repack.

Well for your soldier you can use this soldier template: Here and you can make all the custom gear you want. The nice thing about this is that its all already done just a slight bit of editing in the config file of the template. Hope this helps you out. *OK* *THUMBS UP*

Ok, well I dont know quite what you are asking? Are you saying you cant see the texture on the soldier in game? Or how to apply the texture on the soldier?

He has made the texture but having problems getting it into game :-)

So he wants help on the configs im thinking so it would work and then he can see it ingame.

1st - Check The Rules! 2nd - Use The Search!

Well like I stated above the best soldier template/model to use is the one above. Because all the Configs are already done, you just have to name your soldier and than put the name of your soldier in the configs. And What program are you using to throw your textures on your soldier?

If you are using the template I showed you, than yes he does have a head. If you click on the "LOD's" on the right top hand corner of the screen on Oxygen 2 you will notice numbers like: 1.00 , 2.00 etc. Right now you should be in 1.00 thus you see no head. Now if you double click the 2.00 LOD you will notice the head appears. Now if you want to put a texture on you soldier model all you have to do is: Select all the points/faces of your model(this should display your model to be all RED). Than go to the top and click "Faces" than "Face Properties". Than at the bottom of right of that box that pops up you will see a box that says "Texture" click on the folder to the right of that and select your texture and hit apply. It will take a min to load the texture but shortly after its done loading you should see it, thats how you load the texture on the soldier. *OK* *THUMBS UP*

Thx :D,
I got it, so I highlight anything I want to texture and just apply? Cuz there are some areas im not sure what to skin them with :p. how can I know what should be Skinned and what shouldn't.
and what about the cfg and the modelcfg (have no idea what to do with em) ? With UV maping its telling me that it cant load bitmap, but I was fiddling around and found Filter New Textures sumthing like that but after I choose the file its covered by a million copy of the texture :s

So the process of making a addon in general is getting a model editing it (textures) > resetting the texture paths. then your good to go?

(btw Wyte I was just searching around and found your topic from like 3 months ago I downloaded your P3d (hope you dont mind) and can I say it looks awsome (with the knee guards and stuff)

yea if you go to the bis forumns and in the search type: Whyte_Out you will notice I have a lot of good questions that are answered regarding model making. So it should help you out a lot. I dont mind at all if you want to use my models, I actually quit making it because my computer erased so much of it I had to start over, so feel free to use it all you want. As far as the textures go for your model. When you do the UV layouts, it puts everything that you highlighted in the layout. So if you did that right, all your textures you did in photoshop should go to the right path. The thing about model making is "trial and error" you just got to do a little wrong to get it right. Have fun with the models

80% of all that stuff on there is custom made by me. The only thing I can think of that is not custom made is the soldier and the helmet. So what you see is what you get :-D Sorry to disappoint you friend. Also, the farthest I have gotten with the soldiers are getting them in game (visible) able to move around and do everything. I just have not textured them, thats it. Also, what "Army SF thing" are you talking about?

Oh, almost forgot, your soldier is invisible because you didnt write something right in the model.cfg file for the soldier.
