I've been getting the hang of how to use the basics of the editor such as placing and grouping units, creating basic triggers, using synchronize, etc.

Then when it comes to commands/scripting of any kind I have no clue where to start or where to look for info. I don't know how to fade in / fade out, create text on the screen, create objectives, create an ending trigger, or any of that jazz. So where do I find it out?

I've tried to open the PBO files of some of the official missions for some pointers, but I don't know how to open PBO files.

Not knowing exactly what ArmA is like myself I can tell you that based on my experience with VBS1 that a good site to go to for some basic information would be OFPEC. Have you ever made any missions for OFP by chance?

Nope, none at all. This is the first time I've gotten involved with the editor.

At the moment I am working on a Basic scripting guide, this guide will give you all the info you need to really start scripting.

Think about what mission you wish to make, what objectives, units, events etc. It will make things much easier later on. There are several PBO tools around, im not sure wich are compatible with Arma though, after you unpbo a mission copy its briefing file into your mission file and edit it to suit your needs.

Ticking the objectives, ending conditions, events, etc can be done with simple comands that you can use in triggers, check the comref :) .
