I'm new to the game(s) and the site, so which are the essential mods I should look at downloading?

Depends on what you like, not everyone likes the same.
Browse the addons section and try whatever looks interesting. You can sort by number of hits and that way see which are most popular.

Good luck :-)

Some things I would recommend to anyone...

Units:

75th Ranger Regiment (They come in ACU, Multicam, BDU, & DCU)
U.S. Marine Corps Desert MARPAT

Helicopters:

MH-60 (Black Hawk Down style)
USMC CH-46 & CH-53

Ground Vehicles:

Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAP)
Dune Buggy

Weapons:

M16A4 Forward Hand Grip (Kind of adds to the bland BIS M16A4 Selection)
M4 Forward Hand Grip (Kind of adds to the bland BIS M4A1 Selection)
Tan M14DMR/ Aimpoint

Maps:

Helmand Vally (It's like A-Stan)
Fallujah (Big city map)

Modules:

Persian Hammer (Gulf War type)

Notes:

  • If you don't know how to install addons see that FAQ
  • Make sure to look at the Required Addons for each mod (some require additional addons)

Welcome to Armaholic and have fun! :-)

what are your opinions and recommendations on great mods and addons for CTI/warfare game mode? I particularly like this game mod and would like to enhance my experience.

If you want realism:
Ace 2
Acre for multiplayer mostly
Fallujah ( for cqb combat)
L115A3 variants
Ghillies for a change
Ranger units
Ch53 Chopper
Lingor ( forest and cqb combat) (also great for sniper training)
If you want to play zombies :
DayZ

All of this mods are available from the armaholic downloads page :)

I have been playing Arma for a year now and have downoaded a few mods and missions, but they have been mainly single player.

Since Day-Z took off, my brother, who lives in a different country to me has taken to playing the game.

Can anyone recommend mods/missions that would have us working together against NPCs or other players?

Thanks

Hey there. I've been playing Arma2 (including OA, PMC, BAF), and finished SP campaigns. I'd really like to replay the base ArmaII Campaign, as I really liked it, but this time I'd like to boost it with a heavy amount of realism.

My problem is, I've been experimenting with all kinds of AI and UI and Full conversion mods, but each time I pick the ones I like, I experience very strange behaviours (usually the kind which makes the game unplayable). It might be interference between different mods, so now that I became quite frustrated, I'd like to ask for your experiences:

May I ask your opinion about a most complete, stable, non-interfering collection of mods mainly for singleplayer gameplay, for someone aiming at ultimate realism?

I do not ask for specific assistance about specific mods now, only some bags of mods you managed to use without very annoying bugs for a while. My bundle always has some very serious flaws (cannot aim down the sight right after moving, etc)

BTW, I try to keep my mods up-to-date using Six Updater, so my issues are not due to outdated mods.

Thanks,
Good ranging,
f1re

What would be the point? ACE2 is but the better, more stable version of ACE for Arma2CO, running both would be pointless, and could cause conflicts between files that are now stable and fixed, and files that aren't.

I've been experimenting with all kinds of AI and UI and Full conversion mods, but each time I pick the ones I like, I experience very strange behaviours (usually the kind which makes the game unplayable).
And those mods were?

May I ask your opinion about a most complete, stable, non-interfering collection of mods mainly for singleplayer gameplay, for someone aiming at ultimate realism?
i would have to say if you want total realism then:

ACE2 http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12155
and
project reality http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=15132
i could list probably 100 addons and mods thast could enhance your gaming reality, but one persons version of reality vs another varies as its really on what you deem realistic in terms of features in the game.
My suggestion to you is to go through the download section for Arma2, and OA for addons, modules, and misc and see if there is something there that catches your interest.

I do not ask for specific assistance about specific mods now, only some bags of mods you managed to use without very annoying bugs for a while.
you could always try my COWarMod http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14699 which is one of my 7 compilation mods and the biggest, it has realism features, and many other things, plus its customizable.
Any questions about it, problems, then use the official release thread for it linked on the download page.
===========
As for this thread in general, i would like to recommend a map you guys definatley should play on:
Kunar Province
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=15053
this map is HUGE!!, its pretty epic, you thought takistan was big, this is Takistans great grandpa, the sheer size of the mountains when walking on the low lands is massive, I really enjoy this map, there are others but just wanted to reccomend this one to start, good for taliban, and insurgent type of missions.

Hi
After a week or so I'm getting there - this is a truly great game:)
I am interested in realism, and especially WWII ground stuff.
Advice please as to what I still need to add to get to my aims :)

Currently I have :
Arma 2 CO - Arma 2 1.11 and Arma 2 OA 1.62
CBA 1.0.0pre10
CBA_A2
CBA-OA
I44
ACE 2 OA - Core

I have kept away from DayZ because the zombie side doesn't interest me - maybe there is a load of useful non-zombie stuff in it???
I have downloaded a load of maps.
I would like to play online WWII or later realism stuff, but all seem to want DayZ - are they mainly zombie stuff?
Discovered Planned Assault.

I see Bystrica and Burkovina maps mentioned with just Arma 2 CO - they look excellent but not found them yet - not part of CO version (not Beta)

So, advice please as to what I still need to add to get to my aims :)

Many thanks

Doc
