Hy, I'm Pesso, I just registered on this website. I saw some videos on YouTube and felt in love. It's amazing to see how much things you can do in this game. I mean in arcade games you have precise directions and you can't step out of "the range". But Arma is awesome, I just love the helicopters...hell, I love everything about this game.

Anyway, I told a friend of mine to get me the game and last week for my surprise I received the original DVDs with all the Arma games (Armed Assault, Arma 2, Operation Arrowhead, Arma 2 Reinforcements). Sadly, Arma 2 and OA don't work on my PC. Well actually they do, but after 5 minutes the game blocks and shuts down. Here are my specs, if anyone can tell me if I can run OA

Intel Core Duo 3.1GHz
2GB RAM
512MB GeForce 9600GT
Windows 7 Ultimate x32

So now I started playing Armed Assault. One small problem though, I SUCK!!! It's my first time playing a shooting simulator, maybe the lack of gameplay experience may also be a factor (I played 2 hours in total) but do you guys have some tips for a beginner. I really wanna be good at this game.

Let's put it this way, how was it when you first played Arma and what did you do to become good at it?

Thanks

Welcome to Armaholic and the game :-)

Arma 2 and Arma 2: OA should work with your system. Maybe not the best performance but you should be able to play the game, surely in SP.
Make sure you set all settings to low to start with and see if that fixes that issue.

Now, as for getting the hang of this game...............take your time and spend time.
This is not a game you boot up, and know how to play in a few hours. This takes a lot of time and effort.
Play the SP campaign, play some scenarios, read the manual so you known the keyboard layout and functions etc.

Also playing MP is a good idea however I do not recommend joining public servers as your new you wont like it there.
Check the advertising section to see who is looking for new members and does not mind having to teach and show a new player how it all works. Most clans/units/communities greet new players with a lot of respect and are willing to teach if your willing to invest time and effort ;-)

Arma 2 and OA should work, just first patch them fully but with Reinforcements i think that does it automatically (no idea i have the steam versions)
my specs for you to compare:

Sony Vaio Z Series Laptop
I5 Quad 3.06GHz
1GB GeForce GT330M Dedicated Graphics Card
6GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Pro 64Bit

but welcome to the Game, its one of the few that have hasn't been removed from my hard drive, juts becasue its like lego (you don't buy it for the cover but what you can do with it)

yeah, i totally agree....this is not just a simple game that you play...as for the clans that you guys recommend, i'll better do the campaign first and get the hang of it...problem is that it's very hard to actually hit someone....it's pretty difficult but i can shoot very good with assault rifles but when it comes to sniper rifles, hell breaks loose. Do you guys know a mod that will make shooting more easy and more accurate?

as for the multiplayer sessions, i want to become really good at flying helicopters (black hawks and chinooks)....i'm assuming there are a lot of multiplayer sessions in which they need pilots for extractions and so on

I'm fairly new at this game myself (been playing about 2 months now) and for me the best way to learn was the editor. I just created a few really simple scenarios, like placing a few guys in a village and me by myself, then went in to take em out. Slowly I would move on to more enemies and added a few guys to command. Now I've pretty much got the hang of it, but still have a lot to learn I think.

For helicopters it's the same, just placed myself and the helicopter on the map, and practiced landing on buildings etc. And eventually taking out targets.

Good luck :)

I'm not that much interested in attack helicopters (even though if you really wanna be good at helicopters you have to know everything)...i just wanna carry troops, extractions, surveillance missions or stuff like that...

btw, i think this has to be moved to armed assault since that's the only one working for me right now

I too suggest you to load the editor and try the weapons there.

You can add the ammo box full of weapons and an enemy (or friendly if you don't want to be shot back) at some distance and start practicing your shots.

The same for vehicles and other commands (movement, squad control, ...)

Isn't there a basic explanation of the editor in the manual?
If not I recommend looking for some information about the editor in Arma 2 (e.g. on youtube), if I remember well they're quite similar.
Anyway it isn't very difficult to make some simple setups, you don't need to create whole missions with scripted events
and objectives (which I can't do myself btw) but you can just place some units on the map take control of one unit and start playing.
I am not very experienced at playing any of the Arma games but I spent some time with the editor and I think I've mastered the basics now.

Good luck, hope this helps a bit!

Your going to have to do the legwork yourself as nobody can read it for you ;-)

Check Mr. Murray's Editing Guide if you want to learn....
