PMC 51km Desert v1.9 for ArmA 2 Combined Operations.

This is 51km x 51km desert terrain with war torn cities and villages. There is also few modern (intact) cities, three airbases, six oilfields, six harbors, dirt road network and two lane highway.

Changes are lot of vegetation removed from city roads, harbor 6 added and lot of others (see changelog).

Mapview small and Mapview with features.

ArmA 2 screenshots, 10km viewdistance: image 1, image 2, image 3, image 4, image 5, image 6, image 7, image 8, image 9, image 10, image 11, image 12, image 13, image 14, image 15 and image 16.

Are there more updates planed? Its so great to play on such a huge island but grafics are a bit... too plain. No, no need for animals or civilians, just a bit more detail that dont effect the load too much ;) I really like your map, this is where all parts of Arma2 can be played and i HOPE to see it in Arma3!

Yes I'm going to update it, for example I just discovered a bug on the cfgSurfaces which makes the desert sand as easy to drive as asphalt roads by cars. Also I want to tweak the surface clutter which doesn't look right. Satellite texture needs bit tweaking and finally of course many of the cities need more decorations.

So yes, definitely I'm going to update this terrain and most likely very soon too (no, no dates though heh, sorry).

Ok nice to hear *DRINK* Here is some feedback, i know you already build some maps so you know what your doing. Just the things that catches my eyes first.

From 1000m altitude it looks good but not on the ground. Do you work with lods? Thing you will need it to get good performance and high textures for infantrie.

Remove the satelite textures under the roads and airport. make them more natural, they are too angled.
Remove the satelite textures under the cities and stone section, they have too hard borders. Or with lod replace them when you are < 500m

Work more with desert buildings. Place some big and small walls/bushes/grass. Why are there so many destroyed cities?
Place some stuff beside cities and streets. Some industrial stuff, patrol stations, wrecks.
between street and house there can be place for parking, selling boothes or other stuff. Markets, toilets, bus station, police station and so on.

Another airport would be cool, perhaps a little amateur one.

Here a example with also low ground textures but still looks "ok". Tarin Kot

Is this map auto generated? Just for info, i plan also to start building but dont know how to start ;)

There is no LODs in terrains. When you say doesn't look good, do you mean ground textures, ground clutter or object placement?

Remove the satelite textures under the roads and airport. make them more natural, they are too angled.
From roads, no, its good to see the roads from satellite map. From airport, yes can be done and can be tweaked a lot.

Remove the satelite textures under the cities and stone section, they have too hard borders.
Yes can be tweaked, but I don't want to remove the different satellite texturing under the cities as then buildings just on desert floor don't look good either.

Work more with desert buildings.
The buildings I'm using for modern cities are considered desert buildings ie middle eastern theme. The ruined city buildings are old, but fit on my opinion there just fine. If you know any middle eastern theme ruined building objects, please let me know.

Decoration for the cities has been long overdue on my list :)

Wrecks no, mission editors can do them. You mean more industrial places like oil fields and harbors, or just industrial type buildings to cities or next-to cities?

Markets are good idea and some park's, open spaces. I don't have bus/police station building objects.

Like dirt airstrip? Where would you place it on the map?

I used WrpTool and its region tool functions to place the city buildings randomly. Modern cities are done by hand.

LOD: Was just a question about your plans. I dont know much about Arma maps, just did some playing around with 3D editors ;)

With "satelite" i mean the auto generated textures below the streets (on what you put your real streets). Yes the city ground textures should not look like the rest of the map but at the moment it looks like a sort of mud pool ;) Perhaps some darker desert texture? Sand with city dirt mixed or s.t. like that.

dirt airstrip yes can be. I wont place it in the opposite direction. Beside a middle big city would be cool in the north perhaps.
Individual things are always great, only in england hole cities looks the same ;)
Ah, i forgot. Dont place water around the map, just endless desert. Dont looks natural this way. And give names to the citys ;)

Im curious about next version ;)

Just show some friends the map. Just "wow" about the size and the big cities.

No missions have shown up unfortunately, but I will be making them. I already have bunch of semi-test SP missions (no briefing, just having fun in editor) and couple of polished MP missions like the advertised PMC Delta Safari which I think is very nice and have nice potential.

I've been thinking about SP (as they dont really work in MP) campaign for this too, haven't thought out storyline yet though. But in the normal PMC manner it would be campaign which is heavy and feeling like "oh boy, this is lot of work" kind of thing heh. If anyone has any campaign storyline ideas or even mission ideas, please share as it would really help and motivate me.

Oh and I still plan on developing PMC 51km Desert further, tweak the cities by adding decorations, one brand new harbor / port is planned but because it kind of changes much of the design I'm not so sure, also I want to tweak the satellite texture even more, clean out the hand painted look (citys, mountain tops) out of it.

BTW I experimented with 40960 satellite already, it brough the terrain pbo size up from 244mb into 1.09gb, who knows if I revisit this idea again.

Keep the feedback coming, that motivates me greatly! :)
