OK so I recently got back into PC gaming after 6 years in the wilderness of console gaming. Id always liked the look of Arama 2 and wanted to play it but I was never prepared to invest into a gaming rig and stuck with my PS3. Then I started watching some of chkilroy's videos on Youtube that I found immensely entertaining and along with Dayz I was sold and got myself a pretty damn good rig.

Arama2 OA/CO was my first purchase on Steam, I went through the tutorials and then dived into Dayz. I played that solidly for about about 2 weeks or so but then started to tie of it and started getting into Arama and OA campaigns and scenarios. This is where my fustrations started. Ive been trying my damned best to understand, play and enjoy this game and its almost impossible. Its not the clunky controls (that I dont mind too much) but the AI of both your team mates and enemies is absurd.

Your team mates are the dumbest idiots Ive ever seen in a game, they barely every follow simple orders and I often find myself screaming at the monitor! I tell them to go stealth and they ignore me, I tell them to copy my stance and go prone again they ignore me or even go and stand up in the middle of a field. Stealth missions in general are a joke, I have to constantly tell them to 'hold fire' or they will just open up on anyone in sight, even then my hold fire command is often broken with no reason at all. It seems that the majority of missions Im just giving up on as they seem impossible to finish, I honestly dont see how someone can be expected to command 5 dumb computer AI in a fast paced realistic battle field where they seem incapable of doing the simplest thing. The helicopter mission (number 5) in OA for example, how the heck do you do that? Im flying the chopper and the gunner hardly ever opens fire with the machine gun or rockets when I switch to them I tried changing to the helfire missiles and looking fortargets with tab but it just locks onto APCs thats are miles away, so I try flying AND manually firing which often just ends up with me face planting the Apache :/ I have read several walkthroughs and watched videos alog=ng with going back to replaying the tutorials again with no luck, the reality of being in a live fire mission is no where near that and your team mates are insanely dull. I ended up going onto mission 6 from hell where you have to drive (or fire) a Hummer and command 10 guys in a stryker, when we roll towards one of the road blocks either him or me gets wasted from the rocket fire the reason is that we both need to be opening up with our guns and maneuvering AT THE SAME TIME which is impossible cos I have to tell his dumb ass every single command including open fire which he then doesnt do :/

Then the enemy AI, they are the complete opposite! They can spot and hit me from insane distances with nothing but an AK47 and easily lay waste to my entire squad without batting an eyelid. I find that how quickly they are able to spot your EXACT location, even at night very very unrealistic. I even tried some single player custom missions from this site, a few called 'A different war' or something, same problem, Im a sniper in one and within SECONDS of me dropping someone they all open up on me and know my EXACT position, even though its pitched black and I just fired 2 shots 5 seconds earlier! And then Im supposed to move in and complete 2 more objectives, how is that possible??

Im starting to get the impression that this game is only really meant to be played with several humans as the AI is far too dumb, Im hoping someone can tell me Im wrong though. Are there some mods that can improve the AI?? I read somewhere that there are some that make it harder?? Is this true? Tbh I dont mind a game being diffcult but this is ridiculous....

Anyway, I will end this rant by saying I think the game is awesome, it looks great and I love all the huge maps, mods, community etc but Im finding it so hard to plat (apart form just messing about on armory mode) and may have to quit it soon which I really dont want to....

I think the Islands (maps) are the best bit about the Arma Series. I still absolutely love Sahrani from Arma.
Yeah, the AI suck. To be honest I'm pretty unimpressed with Arma2. Cars that refuse to restart after driving into a lampost and enemy AI that just run around like headless chickens not to mention with crappy animations...I dunno why I bother...I'd rather play some Ghost Recon Classic (Ah, the good old days)
:-D

....that's all folks....!

Play with the editor. Of course, it needs some patience to get into it, but when you're in, you'll be stuck for a long time. Very long.

Play with people. Personally I love Co-op humans vs AI but many others enjoy the spawn camping of Team vs Team. Almost no one enjoys Player + friendly AI vs Enemy AI due to all the issues you mentioned. :)

But as others said, the joy of setting up your own missions and running your friends through the mission is really great.

Yeah controlling AI is not a fun part of the game unfortunately. COOP is your best bet.

Mods to make the AI 'smarter' - no extra work needed in missions/campaigns. Note that some AI mods will break the default Arma campaigns.

Run the most recent Arma beta patch - they have improved the AI apparently (haven't tried myself)
@ASR_AI (active development) I use this one all the time
@Zeus_AI (may be issues with this one.. it hasn't been updated in a while)
@TPWC AI Suppression (applies suppression to enemy AI, player controlled AI, player)
@TPW_LOS (makes the AI better in close combat situations)

These mods improve AI behaviour as well but require them to be integrated into the mission itself (and won't work with the campaigns):

@DAC
@GL4
UPSMON script

That was a really nice summary of Arma 2 vanilla. Indeed the game is frustrating in so many aspects that just asks you to quit playing it. Big time. But then again, this game offers you so much possibilities to do with it that quitting isn't really an option. I've never played coop myself, as my computer really struggles with the game, but I find the editor experience to be extremely rewarding, being able to make your own scenario for me is pretty much the only big thing Arma 2 vanilla has. I highly recommend you to try some of the mods listed in this thread, I have used them all and are indeed pretty decent to say the least. On the other hand, it's ok to stop playing Arma for a while... I think every player has stopped a few times (including myself), but it is one of those games you will (guaranteed) come back for. Oh and welcome to Armaholic! *THUMBS UP*

After playing ARMA 2 for a while, I find that playing with a group of people is your best bet. You can not get that same "tactical" experience from bots. I agree with you. Accomplishing a goal with clan mates or friends is highly more exciting than with dumbass bots. Sadly, it is hard to find friends to play with, at least for me. Most of the servers are either DayZ or private. Only two of my friends play ARMA :P.
