I'm a complete n00b when it comes to addons. I can install them and use them (kinda) but have no idea how to create one. I have been playing around with the scripting for a while in Arma 3 but haven't seen any of the others in the series. I'm no stranger to scripting and code in general. I have an idea for a mod and want to see if I can turn that idea into something, but not having a clue about creating mods I don't know where I should start. Any pointers, good tutorials or intros and any good reference sites; I know of the wiki, but that only seems relevent to scripting and I don't know how closely they're related.

TIA

Find an addon that's similar to what you want to do, break it down and see how it works.

Like I wanted to make an addon that was an action item always on the player so I dissected Instant View Distance mod and that's how I figured out how to make my own addAction style addon.

I'm not sure there is one - I want to create an Air Traffic Control system for all aircraft types, probably introducing an in-aircraft radio to handle communications. I also want to make the controller positions playable with their own user interfaces, possibly utilising the screens available in an objects addon I found (ARP2 - it's awesome). I'm thinking of using ACRE when it's available for Arma 3 Beta for the radio part. I know what I'm planning isn't small and will take a whole heap of work, I just don't really know where to start picking an existing one apart. Could you suggest a mod which adds functionality and game logic like this, and what tools I can use to pick them apart?

Well, I'd start simple.

First make a script that lets you click on one of those screens and displays a dialog with a button that closes it when you click it. That should be, by my experience, fairly impossible. :)

Then adapt that script so that you can see the map instead of just a blank dialog.

Then adapt that script so that you can see others on the map.

Then adapt that so that you only see aircraft and can track them on the map.

Just keep taking your mission and the script and add a little functionality to it as you go along. Once you have that part working how want it maybe add in some times to ACRE like displaying the channels that the various aircraft are on on your map and being able to switch channels on your own screen.

Then once you have all your features setup and functional within this mission then worry about making it an addon. If you're done it cleanly and modularly enough you will have a script version you can just plop into any mission to add it which might be enough.

Cool, thanks matey I'll give that a go. I've already been playing with the idea in a mission so I'll just continue that through.
