For the last few months I have been learning how to make maps for Arma 3. After reaching a stage I felt I would be able to give it a shot, I made several small test maps to have a look at the functionality of Terrain Builder.

I have now begun making my first official map for Arma 3, it will be a UK based map, as stated in the topic title. It will be of the small Island called Fair Isle (See Here for location) I will try to be recreating the Island as accurately as possible, this may be difficult due to the cliffs that surround its cost line & the angle at which the cost lines drastically changes but I will give it my best shot.

I will be creating custom buildings for this Island as well, this will make the immersion a whole lot better and missions run on it feel more realistic.

Map Example
Here is an image of the most recent test of Fair Isle (Winter).

Here is a showcase of the winter version.
(All aspects are changeable and it will not look like this in the final release)

Model Example
Here is a image of a bus shelter that I designed in game for size comparison.

The terrain will take priority over the models, the map will hopefully be released for Christmas in working order to allow people to give feed back, any issues found with the map will be fixed by next release in Febuary next year.

Below is the map with some of the locations added, more will be added and some might be moved slightly to make game play a little easier. Then an image of the map in the editor in its current state.

Here is Fair Isle Airstrip v1!

Here are the links to some of the other building models that I have been working on.

Well if your using L3DT like most terrain makers do, learn how to use every function as I have found that making the base terrain as detailed and realistic as possible on its own can really help to bring the Island or area to life before you even add trees or buildings.

Added 16 hours 30 minutes later:

All these locations are still a work in progress!

Loving it so far, but it seems like it could use a couple more objects or something around the various settlements. Maybe bushes and such to fill up the empty space, as it feels a little barren. Of course, it's all down to you but I feel like that's what would complete the map, really.

Yes I know what you mean I have already added lots of buildings and objects to the settlements and surrounding areas, I have made a development plan that will be released with the next update in a couple of weeks most probably but possibly sooner depending on my free time. So far I have set up a set of 8 or so building compounds and layouts with objects and stuff that have begun to be placed and more are on there way, I will be changing the terrain height at the ferry as well to make a more gradual slope to allow for more buildings and easier access. Any other things anyone wants to have more off and changed let me know as they will be added to the development plan.

Hey Guys,

So I have begun to work in my maps again and will be updating it soon hopefully.

To start what I have done so far:

- Improve the terrain
- Updated height mapping to correct scale and positions
- Updates shape of the island and features around the island

- Roads placement
- Correct roads types are now in place and will be updated to U.K. looking roads
- Using QGIS I have taken the real placements of the roads so it's all correct

What is still needed:

- Texture Updates
- improving the terrain with correct textures that you find in the U.K.
- Detailing the textures and making them look realistic

- Building Placement
- Buildings and their layouts are a big part of maps
- Creating all locations and their layouts

- Trees & Rocks
- Placing trees in realistic locations
- Rocks around the island to provide hard cover

So, after an incredibly busy end to my University career I have graduated.

Why should I tell you all this?

Well because I now have a stable job, more free time and my passion for the Arma series hasn't diminished at all. In the last week I have been setting up my P Drive and other tools to make high quality terrain, my first test for the UK Maps Pack didn’t go as well as I thought it would, but this doesn’t matter, it was a learning experience.

Here are the steps that I have taken so far to ensure that the terrains I setup have the best possible start:

    1. All software recently downloaded has been run through for issues and new features to allow me to get reacquainted.
    2. Height data for the UK used to be hard to get and it wasn’t very detailed as it usually was taken from sub orbital positions. I have found free open source data that is taken every 50m and gives the best representation of the areas we want to see. What this means is when I say real world I mean identical.
    3. Use of objects from other mod packs is being thought about, this is to add more than the base game buildings and objects and allow more realistic environments.
    4. Custom ground textures, I have thought about this a lot in the past but with the recent purchase of a decent camera I will be going to find good areas to get textures around where I live and create a bank of them that everyone can use.

These are the first things I have wanted to get out of the way before the long process of object placement begins. I have the accurate files for road placement along with HD images of the entire terrain to allow for accurate building placement and the correct vegetation detail.

I will keep updating the thread on the progress and hopefully this weekend some screenshots will be posted with some explanations and to what and why.
