I've been searching around on the web and I haven't found a plain explanation on how to hide an object or entity at the beginning of a game, so that it can be later shown once a BLUFOR or OPFOR unit enters the area. Like for ambush purposes.

Can someone tell me what the scripting is for this?

this hideObject true;
in SP, in init field of the unit you want to hide.
or hideobjectGlobal in MP with this remark i posted for V 1.54:
http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=27018

NB:
hideobject isn't enough to avoid some behaviors. Hidden units can fire at enemies because their simulation is remaining as well.

So, for an ambush (SP), name the unit:
in init field of the hiding unit:
this hideObject true; this enableSimulation false;

And in the on act. field of the trigger:
my_unit hideObject false; my_unit enableSimulation true;
