icemotoboy showed another two wip pictures of the cockpit of his amazing C-130 Hercules, in the BI Forums.

Quote icemotoboy:
Thanks RKSL, I realised I made a MASSIVE boo boo with the flaps and have reworked them a little. I'll post some screens later today and if you could give me your thoughts, that would be appreciated.

I've been doing a rough bake of the interior textures, currently 9 lots of 512x512, at a low sample rate. Here are some flat color (no shading, so shading is in texture) that will give an idea of how it will currently look in game. I'll be animating as many of the levers as I can. Anyone who's flown a C130 before, please contact me as I need some more info.

(Moderator please feel free to edit my post re: pictures, I don't know how to make them appear as thumbnails)

Boy Frantz, don't you Armaholic folks sleep? Hehe. Great progress tonight, I'm very close to an Alpha release.

I have two key questions, I particulary want feedback from Armaholic folks and users re: my first one...

Well, good news or the bad news?

Good News:
- File binarizes a-ok, at ~35mb
- Considerable progress made, with animations, textures, and interior

Bad News:
- Best I've got at downrezing my textures is 4 x 2048^2 for external, and 2 x 2048^2 for the interior. Any less and I personally think the resolution is not acceptable. I may be able to get the exterior down to 3 ^ 2048.

How you can help
- Should I do two versions? A Hi-texture version and a low texture version? This would be simple for me to do. Keen to hear thoughts on this, particulary from hosting sites (whats the mechanics of hosting two versions of this, will it be confusing to users, etc...).
- My config settings for the C130 flight envelope aren't right. Anyone have any suggestions? Any ex-C130 pilots want to take a stab at testing it?

Here's tonights fruit, got the cockpit in game for a flight test :) Binarized!

Amazing pics. :)
Just because I like big numbers, do you know how many hours of hard labour you already spent on the addon ?

Awesome work icemotoboy, really one of those addons I am 100% looking forward to :)

Confusion it could be yes, unless clearly described whats the difference between both versions.
But if you ask me the problem is not with the hosting site, but with the mission makers and the players.
Some missionmakers will use the highres version, others the lowres version. So, what happens if someone with a computer capable enough of handling a highres version (or multiple for that matter) is forced to download the low res version cause that particular mission maker used that? People will edit the missions, 10 versions of the same mission will be there each with a different addon setup.

So, if you ask me I would choose to release one version.

I know for example the Schmalfelden map is released in 3 versions, but I think an entire island in different hardware demanding versions is more important than an addon with a single plane (not meaning here your awesome work is not worth it though, cause that would get a contradicting answer).

I think what you need to do here is release a beta version, then you can get some real feedback about all aspects. After, you can give yourself some time to work on the project even further, decide whether another version is required and maybe even let some people help you finish and finalise this beast. :D

I've been very fortunate in that working for a game dev company, I can get some time in at work on this for the purposes of learning. I happen to work alongside some extremely talented game artists so they have been giving me all the tips and tricks. This C130 has been a project since about a month after I got ArmA, with a number of complete revisions including the scrapping of everything and starting again.

Tonight I made some more great progress, focusing on getting elements in game to test and see how they looked. I got two gauges working completely as they should in the C130. Including the altimeter which has the numbers which roll over (very proud of this animation I have to say!). The altimeter will stop once you get too 20,000ft however :) I've even been working on an autopilot system but I'm not sure if this will be done in time for Alpha. I've tided up the Flaps a bit, moved the pilot to the pilots seat (whoops). I missed a few key objects from the cockpit that I will add back in. I also animated the exit door, and linked it to a canopy animation so it opens when the aircraft stops on the ground.

Thanks for the feedback above, I think I will go ahead with hi-resolution textures for the Alpha and if poor user experience occurs on low end computers I'll drop them down to 1024^2.

Couldnt u make two versions with the same classname? So people can choose wich one to download, and there will be no confusion with missionmakers. That shouldnt be a problem if u dont change anything else than the textures.

That plane looks really great, and i wouldnt want to miss it just because some people with better computers than me want fancy looks:O_o
