icemotoboy showed new wip pictures of his stunning C-130 Hercules, in the BI Forums.

Big updates:

C130 flying on lean mixture (no trails)

-----------
Major progress in pretty much all areas. I've remodelled the flaps to include the inner flaps. They are independently animated, and move backwards and angle downwards at the same time, to ensure the effect is similar to what I have seen when researching the C130.

4420-icemotoboy_c130_07.jpg
C130 getting ready for takeoff, notice the two sets of flaps deployed

-----------
After no joy getting exhausts to work on the engines through the engine (appears to only work for vehicles and ships), I decided to script my own in.

4420-icemotoboy_c130_08.jpg
C130 with flaps down and engines at full power

-----------
I have nearly finished my base textures, in grey USEC markings. I will be producing variants for camo and etc... if I have time but I won't let it hold up the release. I have Specular, Normal, and Detail mapping on the body.

4420-icemotoboy_c130_09.jpg
Detail shot showing rendering of engines and textures up close

-----------
The cockpit is fully animated, I am modelling the gauges with as much attention to detail as I can (including rotating numbers in the altimeter). I will be rebaking it once I have finished modelling.

4420-icemotoboy_c130_10.jpg
I am animating all gauges that I am putting in the cockpit

-----------
The cockpit provides great visibility, and I am hoping to have a rudimentary VOR/NAV script in place that allows you to place VORs and use them with the HSI I have put in. The navigator will have the ability to set this for the pilot. This may not be in for Alpha.

The USEC C130 is going to be very much a multi-crew vehicle

All hail Foxhound, our beloved leader, our great guide to the ArmA news, HAIL FOXHOUND !!! XD

Really pleased with how its progressing, it takes a while but once you understand the asset pipeline doing many things in ArmA is quite achievable.

Regarding textures, I have trialed 1024^2 textures, over the 2048^2 textures and noticed little difference. Perhaps I could produce a texture pack with the high resolution ones in it? The texture pack would contain everything the same, except with high resolution textures. Then addon makers could use just one name for the C130 and there would be no problems.

Current textures for exterior are as follows:

Diffuse external:
c130_1_CO.paa - 1024^2 Left Wing
c130_2_CO.paa - 1024^2 Right Wing
c130_3_CO.paa - 1024^2 Left Side
c130_4_CO.paa - 1024^2 Right Side

Render external:
c130_1_NOHQ.paa - 1024^2 Normal Map
c130_1_SMDI.paa - 1024^2 Specular Map
c130_3_NOHQ.paa - 1024^2 Normal Map
c130_3_SMDI.paa - 1024^2 Specular Map

I think, at this stage, I will release with the 1024^2 textures, as I find running it in an ArmA game with full textures is straining my system at home despite outstanding hardware. I will test and provide a high resolution pack, and see how it goes, possibly making the ArmA2 release with the 2k textures.

I have a question, after the alpha/beta comes out are you planning on having a full textured cockpit that simulates the real one or just the 4 main gauges that we see? I personally think it would be cool to look around the whole cockpit and it feel like im actually in one.

I'll be adding pretty much all of the dials, anything I miss will be in texture.

I'm considering my next project as well.... either a:

* P-3 Orion
* B-52
* B-1B

Any ideas? Funny enough, I prefer flying the smaller aircraft but I wanted to pick something that hasn't already been modeled in ArmA. If anyone can think of any useful small jet aircraft they'd like to see in ArmA that hasn't already been done, please let me know. Would LOVE to have tried my hand at an F16!

Awsome to hear that bro. Yea im a big rig kinda person so I like big cargo planes but I would love to see a either f35,f15,b-2 or hopefully a C-5 galaxy. Seeing the screens of your work I would get your addon in a heart beat cause of the quality if you did any of these suggestions.

God I had to correct this because I missed so many grammer errors LOL

Well there is already an F15 and an F22. I figured the B-1B might be more useful (and interesting) than the B-2. I liked the idea of animating the swept wings. Dropping 84 bombs on a laser designated target with a B-1B sounds fun! I thought about a galaxy as well, but I want to test out and refine some cargo scripts and get all that sorted first. I also thought the P-3 might make a good surveillance aircraft.

I said f35 not the f22 raptor, the b-1b sounds like a good idea. Also Im still new to the game but how hard is scripting and modding for this game (no experience in this field execpt a few alterations in bf2 codes). and what modeling sowftware you use

Its not an easy thing to learn. Pick something simple, an existing weapon, and mod it. My first mod was a flaregun (unreleased, but fun). Read the BI Forums, download others mods, and see how they did it.

I use 3ds Max 2009, Body Paint, UV Layout 2.0, Adobe Photoshop, and Mudbox 1.0 for my modelling and texturing.

My considerations for my next project is:
- E-2C Hawkeye
- P-3 Orion (Probably RNZAF's P-3K2 Orion upgrade)
- DDG / Frigate
- Aircraft Carrier
- A-4K Skyhawk (RNZAF)
- B-1B Bomber
- B-2 Bomber
- F-15
- F-16
- F-35
- NH-90 (again RNZAF)

Have you considered making the SR-71 Blackbird. That would be a good surveillance aircraft. Also the F-106A Delta Dart would make a decent fighter/interceptor.

I ready have an Alpha for an F117 out, I'll be releasing the Beta shortly after the C130 goes alpha. I really want to do something that has a "bang". I've love to do some naval aircraft (helo's with torpedos!) but need some ships for that. I might do one more aircraft before moving onto some ships.
