So, I'm an avid player of the Arma series. I love the realism and difficulty it provides, that you just can't get in Call of Duty or Battlefield.

However, due to a busy lifestyle, I normally can only play for an extended period of time about once every two weeks.

Due to the above, I find it incredibly difficult to find a solid group of people who want to play with me, citing me as not active enough. And since I'm not active enough, I search for multiplayer servers that accept anyone.

However, with these servers, I often get people that are either screwing around, or a bunch of lone wolfs that don't/can't work together. As a result, over the years I've learned to stick to single player, playing with AI that I know I can actually work well with.

I'm new to the forum, which is why I'm posting this, but has anyone else had a similar experience or is it just me?

Some groups are so strict and particular that they drive away their membership. There are good servers out there, though.

Same feelings here. I just play in coops with two friends and sometimes we play in KotH and domination servers. It´s pretty hard to find a group of players that just want to have a nice time for a while continuously. We like to play ArmA as the military sandbox that is, rather than a milsim, but i would love to do some coops recreating modern day conflicts with 4-6 players (we´re just 3 right now and it´s pretty hard to play the 3 at the same time),

Unfortunately it's becoming more of this.

It seems most of the servers these days are empty or "Life" variants.

There are always a few co-op servers out there but its rare to find a good server working together.

Due to this I actually decided within my group of friends to rent our own server and create a new co-op experience. But due to forum rules I shall not advertise said server here. All I can say is find a group of friends before you find the server. I can also recommend a few game types for more co-operative gameplay.

Number 1 being Insurgency. Why? Because it takes effort and co-ordination to find the objectives and complete the mission. Unfortunately these servers are quickly becoming ghost-like and outdated.

Another good game-mode is Invade and Annex. I can't describe the amount of american servers which host this gamemode. As I'm aussie. But I personally know the continued developer of the Invade and Annex project. He's no longer releasing public updates which I can imagine is hurting some servers around the world. There are however a number of servers he supports and releases his content too. It's a well developed game mode with lots to offer. Definitely worth checking out if you can find an appropriate server.

Really?

I was under the impression that there are plenty of coop-communities around that consist largely of older players who don't always have time to play.

Keep looking I'm sure it won't be too hard to find a more relaxed group that enjoys a good round every now and then, without putting up strict activity rules.

Ok maybe the community got a bit watered down with the influx of new players, but don't let that fool you. There are still plenty of ofp/arma veterans or likeminded people around. You just have to look at the right places (like here). Like BroBeans already said, there are some game modes that really encourage teamplay and you can often find decent people on the servers that run them.

Or if you're looking for more of a PvP experience, without all the KoTH or Life BS, you could give TacBF a try.

There are a lot of very capable people on this forum, willing to spend some of their time to help you out. So if you have a problem, it surely isn't too much to ask that you atleast take the time to describe it properly. Thanks.

If your ok with using Mods give me a shout and check out what we do on my server..more focused on infantry and logistics than air support or overly used armor. Keep server hopping you'll find a decent a fit.

I run an Insurgency server which gets up to 20 people every now and then. Normally it's just a fireteam or two though, it's fun enough. I'd say search for Insurgency servers or small communities servers.

A note about "realism/milsim" groups etc is that 99% of the time they'll overadvertise what they're doing. It'll be more of a "Fill out this LOA form" than people actually working together.

My experience is that you should serverhop. Join EVERY teamspeak you do find and don't be afraid to stick around even though there's low pop. Eventually it'll grow. That's just my experience though.

From my hosting point of view I can say that my server has been almost completly empty. Our group has played other games/been busy and then later the server has had a steady playerbase. Just because a server is empty one day doesn't mean it'll never be an option.

Regarding searching for servers I'd say search for ACE/ACRE or ACE/TFAR. That's how I found all my favourite servers in A2. Some other mods to search for would be RHS if you like that type of stuff etc. Use keywords and don't search for "ACE TFAR RHS SUPER INSURGENCY HIGH FPS" but rather "RHS" then if you find nothing "ACE", then "TFAR" and so on.

Good luck finding a server you like, MP is so much better with the right people! :)

Some good tips here.

I'm a new player as well. Almost 2 weeks now. I haven't done anything online yet since I've downloaded so many cool mods, and every time I join a server, I seem to immediately get kicked for the mods, so then I just go back to having fun in single player with all the missions I've downloaded and messing around in the editor.

a lot of the time servers won't allow mods. But there a few out there, although they're probably limited to a select few 3-5 mods, it can be great fun.

If you're looking for some online modded play I'd definitely look into finding a small casual community/unit that doesn't focus so heavily on milsim and just enjoys the game.

Although if you're into it I'd recommend finding a decent milsim unit.. they can be a lot of fun as long as you find one that suits you. No point joining a serious unit that focuses more on ranks and structure than gameplay. :)

Edit:
Theres a few servers out there that allow whatever mods you like clientside, it means you can use whatever gear from the arsenal, but if people don't have the same mod they'll just see a naked man running around :P

p.s Welcome to Armaholic :)

Edit for relevance:
There's an MP mission by GHOST called Enemy Assualt. Also a co-op mp mission similar to Invade and Annex. Might be worth checking out

# XianGrim : I help run a small-ish group of guys. We have "operations" once a week on Saturdays on our private server and Friday nights are our "pub" night where we work together on our public server with other people. We're a more "laid-back" mil-sim unit and we focus on making sure our guys have fun. We have all types of players from people who show up every day to those who come just for the operations. For us, we only remove people from our rosters if we haven't seen or heard from you in MONTHS, not days. If anyone's interested, PM me.

This isn't a post to advertise your unit.

Please keep posts on relevant to the topic

I'm in the same boat as DrOrange looking for a good group of folks to fly helis with. I'm retired & have a lot of time on my hands. I'm lookin for "units" that lend themselves to this particular activity. Is there a thread that "advertises their unit"?
