Hi, i'm just new to this forum however i'm not new to modding or games development.

I AM new to modding using the tools for ARMA.

I originally wasn't going to mod for ARMA however I've just been doing some random modelling work and am doing vehicle models from the Alien movies. Currently I am working on the M-577 APC used by the colonial marines with a really poor variety of reference images, however it's coming along really nicely and should be done soon.
Right now I have done enough to be able to import it into ARMA however.

Anyway, I have been scouring the net for a few hours now, trying to find tutorials for ARMA modding and so far haven't found anything decent, finally I gave in and decided to make a post asking for some directions.

If anybody can provide useful tutorials or tutorial websites in regards to ARMA modding, then it would be greatly appreciated, and you would all benefit aswell, since you would be able to play with my models in game...who doesn't want to fly a UD-4L:
http://colonialmarines.wikispaces.com/file/view/drop00.jpg or drive the Colonial Marines M577: http://imcdb.org/images/040/477.jpg)

I don't like showing WIP stuff, so you'll all just have to wait until I get my work in game before you see pics, but getting to that stage will probably be alot slower without your help.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to your response, just as much as I look forward to getting these beasts in game :)

BTW, the below are links I've found but not sure if they are the best thing to get started with or not.
http://ofp.gamepark.cz/_hosted/brsseb/tutorials.htm (I was following the first tutorial and immediately saw it was for OFP, however I have seen on the forums that it is very useful for ARMA modders, I haven't really got hooked into doing the tutorials just yet as I figured there might actually be a nicely written step by step tutorial for ARMA)

:welcome to armaholic.

Did you check this topc? It is a sticky.

I have changed the topic title to save me from locking it, as we already have 348932847 topics asking how to make addons in ArmA.

And finally, seeing the Dropship in ArmA would be a nice addition as I am a bit of an alien fan myself. But we already have the APC (see here).

Hi Dead3yez, thanks for the heads up on the APC, I just checked that APC out and it's pretty good, however it feels very incomplete and innacurate, still a very nice attempt though, and I really enjoyed just driving around in that thing. I was happy that the author also included the interior; although it wasn't a very well detailed interior, it was still more than I expected, and the interior is probably the hardest part to do, so even though it did seem to be the authors own interpretation of the interior, and was innaccurate to design, it was still pretty cool to sit in the back :D

On that note, seeing that vehicle in game gives more more motivation to get mine done with more accurate details, better texturing and so on.
It's more just a learning experience for me than anything else, so even if there are these vehicles already out there, it's always nice to see ones own work inside an engine.

As for that link, i'm just browsing through there now, and also see that the link I put at the end of my post is recommended even in that stick.

So OFP and ARMA are pretty much the same when it comes to modding? That guide is ok? there are no shortcuts taken, no parts of the tutorial that arent relevant to ARMA?

I should also mention that I use Maya 8.5, from my previous experiences, the majority of games don't support plugins for Maya (real bummer), will this be an issue for me with ARMA modding?

UPDATE:

I had a look through those tutorials at:
http://ofp.gamepark.cz/_hosted/brsseb/tutorials.htm

And it's kindof hard to follow, not because the steps are difficult, it's because the way the tutorial is written makes it difficult :P
I shouldn't really complain though, I used to do modding for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and had to follow russian tutorials which I used babelfish or google translator with :P...maybe i'm just getting old and my patience is worn thinner.

The tutorials initially made for OFP do work with ArmA, there are some differences but nothing spectacular. Once you have familiarised yourself with all the information you will start to notice the differences yourself. You should also look at some existing models, configs etc, look here.

Ok, here is just an update on my progress. I am currently trying to do the car tutorial with my own model.

- I have now been able to get my APC into O2.
- I have now been able to convert my textures (512x512 single colour WIP textures) to .paa
- I have textured my APC
- I have now got a 0.000 LOD and a 1.000 LOD (1.000 LOD is .95 scaled down)
- I have now made my 1.000 LOD weighted
- I have saved the project as a .p3d file to P:/apc577/apc577.p3d
- I have copied the land vehicle config file (.cpp file) from the tutorials as instructed by the tutorial and edited the file by changing the "firstCar" words to apc577. Below is the config file.

class CfgModels
{
	class default {};
	class Vehicle: default {};
	class Car: Vehicle {};
	class Jeep: Car {};
	class apc577: Jeep {};
};

class CfgPatches
{
     class apc577
     {
         units[] = {apc577};
         weapons[] = {};
         requiredVersion = 1.0;
     };

};

class CfgVehicles
{

     class All {};
     class AllVehicles: All {};
     class Land: AllVehicles {};
     class LandVehicle: Land {};
     class Car: LandVehicle {};
     class Jeep: Car {};

     class apc577: Jeep
     {
                displayName="apc577";     // Displayname in editor
		model= \apc577\apc577;	// our p3d model path

		side=3; // Its on the civilian side
		crew="Civilian2";	// The default driver are civilians
		maxSpeed=300;		// Max speed
                transportSoldier=0; // Right now just driver, no cargo
      };
}

- I have placed the .paa texture file that i'm using into the P:/apc577/ directory.
- In the P:/apc577/ there are the following files:
apc577.p3d
green.paa
config.cpp

- I have then gone to BinPBO and converted the P:/apc577 folder to a .pbo which was placed into the armed assault addons folder.
- I try to find the vehicle by going to empty -> cars in the editor unit placement menu but I don't see anything. I have also looked at the other menu's and can't find my vehicle in there either.

- I have now found out that due to the other APC file I downloaded that you linked above, there was some sortof conflict (how ironic -_- ) and it wasn't showing the model in game, however I deleted the other APC from the addons folder and can see my vehicle in game, however when trying to use it, the game freezes without any error :(

I am also currently getting help from Gnat over on the ofpec.com forums, who gave me some more ARMA relevant code, I am using the code he provided me.

Vilias's APC is pretty cool though, and I have improved the marines to be more movie-accurate with the helmets camoed and their own camo has been redone too. All we really want are the xenomorphs, we already have the predators: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12695. And the dropship with the pilot would be just amazing.

Do you really think digging up a 3 year old thread with a request is usefull?
In case you do.........we do not.

The other request thread which was 2 years old and which you thought was great to dig up as well had your post deleted and the thread locked to make sure it goes back to where it belongs.......history!

I advice you to stop digging up old threads when you have nothing significant to add and any request is not significant.
