Playing through the first mission seems to be really difficult, even on easy settings. The AI for my squad seems to be dumbed down, and they are constantly winning Darwin awards. I do my best, but usually the whole squad is wiped out within a matter of minutes. I perform sweeps and got better and faster at flanking the enemy units, but my AI squad mates keep running around while the OPFORs have target practice sessions. A few times I was able to keep a couple alive, but that doesn't sit too well.

Any tips for keeping your AI squad alive? Keep in mind, in the first mission, i'm not even in command of the squad. It seems almost trivial to run past the enemy units, but the AI never makes it when I do that....

I've caught the enemy AI on occasion firing through 100% concealment too. Just seems like the BLUEFOR AI is watered down to make you work harder, but it is not so great when you always end up alone.

-----

Note: Best so far I was able to save three out of the squad, but it really felt random. I'm not at all sure that I helped much if any.

Hi and :welcome to Armaholic.

Are you talking about the first mission of the campaign?

I moved your topic to Missions forums and could u edit the title to show what u ask? That kind of titles mean nothing. Something like "Official Campaign - Mission #1 - AI help" would be better.

For that mission (if it's the one u talk about) there is already a topic: SPOILER!! - Official Campaign - Mission #1, even if your answer is not there keeping all talk about a mission in the same topic is a good idea.

I was able to pass the first campaign mission without too much trouble. Just seems to be a rough scenario.

Well you are outnumbered in the Strelka fight, plus the enemy has a light armor vehicle which even the air support sometimes fails to destroy.

I usually only pass the mission with one friendly soldier left but once got past the village with 3 other soldiers still alive, it all depends on luck.

I beat that single mission on my fist try on the second difficulty level, the trick is to get ahead of your squad and do all the dirty work. Then keep laying down suppressive fire with the SAW at the BRDMs tires. The only thing that gave me trouble was the Cobra took forever to get to Strelka. Also once you destroy the village, get a new weapon.

Armstrong-"Hey Carillo, do you see that?"
Carillo-"See what?"
Armstrong-"Something's burning over there, see the smoke?"
Carillo-"That's not smoke it's dust!"
Armstrong-"Dust? i don't get it."

The best I managed was 3 others on my squad at the end. Best I managed otherwise was that one time I was able to steal the BRDM and run off with it. For some reason the BRDM driver decided he wanted to drive a tractor instead, and left the keys in...

Looks like it isn't just that mission, i'm having trouble with lemming AI pretty frequently. In the 2nd mission, you can't let any of your team die, but they constantly run around on the road, far away from cover, presenting easy targets.

I'm looking for a clear, concise method for stopping the AI from becoming a lemming hoard. I really don't enjoy playing half an hour into a mission only to have stupid AI ruin (and end) the mission. If all it takes is leaving them all behind, i'm OK with that, but it makes their very presence pretty much useless.

Make sure to save your mission often.

Are you using the latest ArmA2 patch (1.03)?

Can you command your AI in the second mission? If so have a look at this AI Squad Command Guide.

I have had no difficulty with this mission, command ai to go into danger mode or use the take cover command to stop them running onto the road.

Spoiler!

Yep, I am using the latest patch. I had a look at the guide, i'll have to check out the videos a little later. Looks like perhaps I needed to tell the squad to move in "danger" or "stealth" mode. They did fine until it was time to move and then they would take to the street for a bullet sandwich. Reading that guide, I think I have a good idea why now.

So much to learn, and I haven't even gotten too engrossed in editing yet! though alot of videos on youtube showing the possibilities of attachTo have me itching to try it out... mobile MGs mounted on cows and mechwarrior things made of various vehicles and a C130. Too fun to pass up on forever!

EDIT:
Finally passed 02 without too much trouble. Thanks for the helpful links!

I toyed around with the attachTo function a bit and was able to come up with some bizarre combinations. Attach a bunch of mass graves and grave crosses to rabbits. It's almost halloween, after all!

Also, running around with a massive antenna array stuck to your head does wonders. Especially if you put a checkered flag on top. The editor is WAY too much fun. That much fun might just be illegal... it was hard to stop laughing obnoxiously loud before 10PM rolled around.
