Armed Assault Hellenic Warfare Mod

Hellenic Warfare Mod

Armaholic.com had the chance to interview the project team of "Hellenic Warfare Mod".
HWM is the acronyms of Hellenic Warfare Mod. The mod theme is the Greek Army.

Question:
Can you give a short summary of the HWM project and what you are aiming for with it?

Answer:
The Hellenic Warfare Mod is an ambitious effort to present a total conversion Mod of BIS excellent game Armed Assault. By this we aim to present the fullest extend possible of the Hellenic Armed Forces into the game, utilizing ArmA unique modding capabilities and presenting an entirely different experience altogether, always based on reality and real time regional features.

Question:
How big is the team working on this project? Could you give some details about who is doing what for this mod?
Are all the members from Greece or did you also recruit some people from other countries?

Answer:
The HWM team has joined forces with the Hellenic ArmA Community (HAC), to bring the whole project to life. While the two teams share common ground and members, HWM has the actual responsibility of producing the mod, while HAC operates as beta testing, giving feedback and other useful information. As for the people involved in the actual modding, well, we have a team of 4 modelers-renderers, Sparky, Satyros, Whiskey and T-Rex, Mainframe is our lead scripter assisted by Whiskey, and the whole HAC team as beta testers and the provision of material for the modelers, to name but a few.

Question:
Right now you update the public with renders/screenshots of nearly finished models together with some info about the model itself.
Will you release some videos as well in the near future to show more of your work and more important, show it in game?

Answer:
Actually, a couple of videos have seen the light recently, but only to present an artistic view of the project. Surely, in the immediate future we will be able to present more of our work.

Question:
You have started this mod for OFP originally but it never was released, not even small parts.
This and seeing you keep on working on more material, what size of mod can we expect? How much units/missions, etc have you planned to release?

Answer:
It is true that OFP served as primary school for most of us at HWM. Back then we worked independently, now we have joined forces. As for the mod size, we plan to simulate the bulk of the Hellenic Armed Forces, its weapons, tactics, deployment and environment, so you can expect quite a few releases after the initial one, which will include the backbone units of every weapon.

Question:
So far we have seen some info about some weapons/units being close to final. However can you give a more complete list as to what the team is aiming at to include in this mod?

Answer:
Well, we have already incorporated the standard infantry weapons, such as the H&K G3A3-A4 and the MG3. Also we have the M113 APC and the Leopard 1A4 MBT operational, and we are finalising the Huey and the HAF F-16C Blk30 as far as air units are concerned. The main infantry and special ops units are also ready, though we tend to improve them once in a while. A complement of all the MBTs, APCs, Helicopters, Ships, Artillery is expected to be our final goal. Just have a look at the entire Hellenic arsenal, and you pretty much get the idea what we are aiming at!.

Question:
In regards to OFP, will this mod contain any new features you were not able to include in OFP due to engine limits? If so can you already tell something more about it?

Answer:
Obviously, the game engine and the extended scripting gives us the opportunity to experiment a lot. Insofar, a couple of interesting things can be seen in our M113, for example we were able to incorporate 'multi turreting' support, a feature not available in OFP, but as with every WIP we are still working on many things.

Question:
I didn't find any information about the campaign and included missions but is there already something you can tell us about it?
Will it be a fictional campaign or will you try to stay close to real life and use some of todays armed conflicts and/or political situations to base the story on?

Answer:
Let's say that we will try to keep things real...where possible. ArmA is a game and must be viewed as such, and we sure wouldn't want to step on anyone's toes...However, the regional situation does offer some interesting possibilities, which we aim to explore.

Question:
Will the missions included aim mainly for the SP, MP or both aspects of the game?

Answer:
Campaign and multiplayer are our main goal, after that anyone can make a SP...

Question:
You are planning on making 2 islands. Is there any update you can give us about it?
For example what size will they have, what environment will they have? Will they reflect the Greek landscape?

Answer:
Our initial programming calls for one island, in which the first phase of the campaign will be executed, and another, not-quite-an-island area for phase two. Think of it as defensive and offensive operations respectively. Geographically, they will reflect the Greek landscape, and new buildings, flora and fauna will be produced, to reflect the regional architecture and environmental trends. Satellite imagery and other means are used to depict an image as close to reality as possible.

Armed Assault Hellenic Warfare Mod #7

Question:
How much realism will you build in your mod? This in regards to the models and how they work?

Answer:
As much as the game engine permits...the models will be accurate, that's we we make them from scratch, and we try real hard to keep the performance close to the real thing...an M-60 MBT simply cannot outrun or outgun a Leopard 2A6...

Question:
In regards to realism, how do you get your information? Is there a military advisor? Do you guys have some real life experience in the Greek Army?

Answer:
Actually, lots of folks from the team are in the military. We are also in touch with people in the Airforce and other branches of the Armed Forces, so I guess you could say we have solid information. All of us have served in the Greek Army, actually used some of the very weapons we simulate, and that's a plus. We will also try to utilise the good old-fashioned features from OFP that added to the realism of the gameplay, namely the internal vehicle view, the lack of which in ArmA disappointed quite a few of the OFP veterans.

Question:
Like many other teams and projects you are waiting for the modding tools to be released by BIS to finalize your addons.
As I think most of you are aware of, the community has found some nice ways already to edit the game. Will this influence any ETA for your mod and if so can you already give an eta?

Answer:
As with all the community, we await the tools. At this point it is safe to say that the tools will have a huge effect on productivity, so any ETA would not be accurate.

Question:
If BIS keeps holding back on the release of the tools will your team decide differently than stated earlier and will you release parts of the mod instead of waiting to be able to release it all at once?

Answer:
This is definitely a course of action we seriously consider if the tools are held back for a long time. At this point we do have the manpower and the resources to proceed with our tasks even without the official tools. However, in order to guarantee full and total compatibility with BIS game structure,we deemed wise to put a few things on hold until the actual release of the official tools.

Armed Assault Hellenic Warfare Mod #9

Question:
What are your other future plans regarding Arma and HWM?

Answer:
Well, we really hope we can offer the community a chance to see something different, and we are eager to enjoy it ourselves! We love playing the game as much as modding it, and we do hope BIS keeps improving it. To that end, anything we can do to make things better, we will do so.

Question:
Is there anything we didn't ask but you would like to share with the community?

Answer:
Just keep your head low and pass the ammo!! Thanks for the chance guys!
