Suma has posted some unofficial information about the differences regarding performance in Arma 2 between Dual Core or Quad Core CPU's in the
BI forums.
As said this is unofficial information and things could very well change when the game is ready for release.
We thought it was some very interesting information about a discussion where, till now, nobody really knew Arma 2 was standing regarding CPU support.
Quote Suma :
Our intention is to scale at least to some extent to quad cores (this means with quad cores you should have either better performance in some scenes than in dual cores). Therefore the game should run better on Quad Core compared to Dual Core assuming they both run at the same frequency.
That said, you can get higher frequency Dual Core for the same money as you could get Quad Core. My prediction is 3.3 GHz Dual Core will most likely run the game better than 2.5 GHz Quad Core, while both will cost you approximately the same.
One thing to note: different scenarios / workloads may show different performance patterns - e.g. it is possible missions with huge numbers of units will runner better on 2.5 GHz Quad Core than 3.3 GHz Dual Core.
Disclaimer:
This is only a prediction and things can still change before the game is released.
Since I have a 8800GT and a dual core, I think upgrading from 8800GT to GTX285 will boost much more FPS than a quad core with the same bucks.
Ermm hemmm u lot r forgeting about tri core
No matter how many cores ARMA2 will need, over clocking is necessary.
Let's get a Core2 duo CPU up to 4G,or a quad core CPU up to 3.6G.
:D
@bamboo, actualy, the cheaper E8400 dual core can be overclocked from 3.0ghz to 4.x on air, and maybe 4.5ghz on water.
@Bamboo:
But you have a good solid point. I knew something nagged in my skull when i read that
Will start investigate and prolly go quad too then!
Now when you mention it, i think your absolutelly correct. I think though its not about "why do that when you can..." Not everyone out there are comftorable with OC'ing, and BIS wont go tell people to overclock im sure for obvious reasons
I'm saving up.. I also have christmas, my birthday (19th Jan) which will hopefully be enough time to get/earn enough money to buy the game maybe even just before the release.
wish list: quad core computer with a fast frequency, plenty of RAM and a good graphics card.
can anybody send me a message or post on here what a reccomended graphics card would be (preferrably NVidia PCI-E and top of the range :D).
At the moment i have an ATI graphics slot and card which isn't compatible with a quite a few games :con i also don't have enough RAM and frequency at the moment for any modern games.
None of what was said in the post or the comments takes into account the fact that Intel's CPUs are so good right now that you can overclock any of the quads on air up to the same speed as the dual cores.
For instance, I have a q6600 that is stock at 2.4, but with just 10 sec. time in the BIOS I can bump the FSB up and am now running at 3.01, or the same speed as the e8400 dual core. And my temps are just barley above what they are at stock speed.
So why on earth if the prices are the same would you want to go duel core.
:| I didn't realise it was meant to be a joke.
:lol
Offcourse, you just have to move the beads really fast.

What? :O_o
Post your specs in the ArmA 2 forum section and ask the question again and then maybe someone can help.
will Arma II play fluently on my abacus ?
Me too.
Me too, and if I want to feel really smart about myself I am going to save a little extra so I can buy a fast quad core
To me it sounds like ArmAII will not be fully supported on Quad core (only use 2 cores). I think that is just what is being said. I'm upgrading to quad core when I can.
Lol, actually I didn't read it all
Became too upset for reading all after first couple of lines. lol
Best regards, Kodiak.
