Armaholic goes 1Gbit! Downloadspeeds should be good again!

Over the past few months we have seen a massive increase in visitors here on Armaholic. Of course that is a good thing and we enjoy seeing everyone use our website for what we made it. We also hope you keep using our services as you have done till now.
However, good things sometimes cause bad things. In this case the increase in visitors caused massive overload on our servers bandwidth. If a few hundred people are downloading at the same time on a 100MB line I think you all understand this will result in slow downloadspeed, no matter what we do.
Yes, we have read all the forum posts and have seen all the emails we recieved

Read the full article on Armaholic

Mission releases and news

We would like to explain why we decided at this point to not create news for each and every mission which has been submitted to our website, posted on the BI forums or posted here on our own forums.

Since the Arma 3 Alpha went "public", it had a great acceptance. This means a lot of people have been creating new content for the game. We have been dealing with a continuous flow of releases, and it is almost impossible to stay up to date with all releases. We are working really hard so everybody's work is accessible from our website but we have to make some decisions to be able to continue our support.

Choose your news - Improved news selector added!

Since the release of the Arma 3 Alpha there has been a massive flow of news every hour. This caused many news items to quickly disapear to page 2 and futher.
So, to make sure people can easily browse the news they are looking for we have fixed the news selector we had in the past already so people are, once again, able to choose any specific news category.

You can find the new selector above the first news item. It has handy drop downs so you can easily choose the category you wish to see the news from only.
Iron Front D-Day is the first content update for Iron Front: Liberation 1944. D-Day adds eight new single-player and six new multiplayer missions to the main game. Expansive landscapes in Normandy are featured, including the famous Omaha Beach where the Allied Forces launched Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944.

Armaholic server upgrade! Website closing saturday morning.

In preparation for Arma 3 (yes, for real) and for the fact our website continous its growth in many different ways we decided it was time to buy a new additional server.
We are going to split the traffic from now on. We will have a new server (specs below) on which we will run the website and another seperate server to host the files on. That file server will exist next to our current additional French file server.
This means we will have 3 servers for this website and another small one which we use to host community projects for free.

The new server we bought I am pretty proud of, its

Read the full article on Armaholic

Sunday morning around 03:00 CET (that is 01:00 GMT and 02:00 BST) the armaholic server will be down and unreachable for approx 10 minutes. Our host will disconnect the old and damaged hard drive.
Lets hope this server shutdown will not have the same result as the previous one!
All our backups are up to date, clients who we do not backup by default have been informed and all other hosted clients who did not recieve a message dont need to worry, I have done it for you.

Since saturday morning I guess most of you have noticed our site has been offline. At first it was a schedueled downtime however our server failt to come back to life when it was booted due to a damaged harddrive. This caused a lot of troubles and everything had to be installed again on a new drive.
We had to move all our files and databases from the damaged drive to the new one. We are very lucky this was actually still possible otherwise we would have lost a lot of files and content, but thanks to our admin Sunraa everything is availabe "as if nothing happened"!!

Dispatches: Dead Silence

Sometimes quiet is best. Parts of Arma2 involve small units infiltrating and neutralizing enemy forces in a stealth system similar to splinter cell or rainbow six. And in order to be successful a silenced weapon is often the required tool for the job.

This week in Dispatches we're looking at silencers and how they are treated in Arma2. Which weapons are truly suppressed? And which are only "quieter?"

We test a vareity of silenced weapons against the AI and against human players to determine what might be the most stealthy gun.

Dispatches: War Without Pain

War can be fun. it's terrible to admit, but sometimes driving around with serious equipment and some good friends can be a fun time. The major downside of actual war of course is the possibility of death. The potential for horror and dismemberment.

But there are plenty of ways to get close to war without running the risks real soldiers do. This week we're talking about ways to fight without running the risk of real injury. This dramatization or imitation of war is something we've been doing for generations. But the way it happens now is much more realistic than children running around with sticks in th

Read the full article on Armaholic

Dispatches - Camouflage: Blending in and Standing out

Every war hinges on exploiting an advantage. And one of the best advantages is for the enemy not to know where you are. To be hidden is to have a leg up on your opponent. For the infantryman, this is almost always done through some sort of camouflage.

The mottled green and brown of traditional woodland camo has come to typify camouflage, but these days camouflage seems to be just as at home on a purse as on a tank. From combat to catwalk, the pattern of disguise has changed.

This week we're looking at camouflage in Arma2 and in the world around us. It was originally made to disguise, but now

Read the full article on Armaholic

Dispatches - The State of Guns in Games

This week in Dispatches we take a look at small arms in videogames. The game industry has become linked with real world manufacturers, but sometimes those manufacturers have problems. The AK-47 might not have a legitimate manufacturer in the future. In Arma2, Kalashnikov manufacturer is identified and associated with its weapons. But thats not always the case. Some games have guns we vaguely recognize, while others have art directors to design anything they feel i

Read the full article on Armaholic

Our server host has some major troubles with one of its routers. This causes connectivity issues with most of their servers.
Those troubles started a few days ago and since that time they have tried to resolve the issue with the help from Cisco (their router supplier).
They have now routed traffic over different routers but are still trying to fix things.
This means although the website is currently back online you might be unable to reach us at other times.

Dispatches: Cover me

This week’s Dispatches examines the difference between playing alone and playing with human players. In Arma2, starting up a co-op game with someone you know is a remarkably different experience than playing single player. Team play is one of the most rewarding parts of modern video-games; to the point that the Enemy Territory and Battlefield series are built entirely around it. Paul Wedgwood is a long time tournament gamer and the designer behind both Enemy Territory and the upcoming Brink. Wedgwood claims “the buzz you get from coordinated team play is beyond and above just about every other experience that you can

Read the full article on Armaholic

However, please note we are still uploading the Armed Assault/Arma2 files, so it is very possible if you want to download a file you get an error. This should be fixed in just a few hours.
Due to the fact the popularity of Armaholic.com is increasing month by month we have decided it is time for a new and stronger server to improve the service we provide the ArmA community.<b

Read the full article on Armaholic

Dispatches - Playing the Dead

Developers try to avoid setting their games in current conflicts because of the difficult political and moral questions they bring with them. But we as gamers can make what we please in the editor, including scenarios ripped straight from the headlines.

As part of a new series on Armaholic; the first of Dispatches discusses the issue of imitating real situations in your Arma 2 editor. As video games become more realistic and reports from conflicts become faster and more accurate, the delay between headline and entertainment might only be a few minutes.
