Hallo!

I am aware that it is next to impossible to give generic advice on upgrading H/W, but I just got my tax returns and I'm willing to throw a few € at getting a better ArmA 2 (OA) experience. The question is: Considering my current gear will I benefit rather from a faster CPU and newer board, or from a better video card, or from an SSD? I can only spare the cash to replace one of those three options right now. This is my current setup:

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9850 (4x 2.5 GHz)
Board: Asus M3N-HT Deluxe/HDMI
RAM: 2x 2 GB GeIL DDR2 1066

HDD: 2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500 GB Raid-0

Graphics: 2x GeForce 8800GT 1024 MB, SLI

I run OA in 1920x1080 with most settings somewhere between med and high and performance is ranging from mostly acceptable to tolerable stuttering for most sp missions. My goal is not really to max out on The Shiny but to improve FPS and overall game performance for scenarios with loads of units, SP and MP alike, and huuuuge viewing distance. :)

Has anyone upgraded from a similar rig and could share their experience, please?

Thanks!

In your case I think a CPU upgrade would benefit most. You could maybe turn the 2.5 GHz CPU in a 3.7 GHz CPU?
An SSD could be an improvement as well but i think since you can only do one upgrade I would go for a CPU speed increase. No matter it has 4 cores, the core speed is low for Arma (I am stuck on 2.8 I believe). If you can spend the money get the fastest CPU for your board you can get.

Maybe others completely disagress so lets wait what they have to say :-)

Unfortunately, your motherboard is going to limit just what upgrades you can make, and just how effective those upgrades would be.

Your choice of CPU would be limited to only the AM2/AM2+ socket. SSDs can be ruled out because I highly doubt that your ASUS mobo is AHCI capable. And the board has a DDR2 mem standard.
____
Start from the ground up with a new motherboard and scavenge whatever you can from your current components.

Howdy! I bought (steam version) of Iron front lib 44. I then have ARMA 2 free and ARMA 2OA demo. I am going to buy the ARMA OA looks awesome. No I was wondering A) What is the best sound mod?
B) What is the best all around mod I seen a little about ACE?
C) Is BAF worth the 9 bucks as an add on?
I probably have a tone of other Q's but there is so many mods- addons - and what nots. Just thought someone could share what the major ones where so I could dig a little deeper on them.
Thank you for your time.

First of all thank you for your replies. Of course I would replace the board and RAM along with the CPU; The fastest supported chip on my board would be the Phenom II X6 1100T for a "modest" 238 €, leaving me with DDR2 RAM and an outdated board (though yes, it does support AHCI), whereas my favoured replacement - an FX-6200 (6x 3.8 GHz), an ASRock 990FX Extreme3 and 2x 4GB GeIL EVO Corsa (DDR3-1866) - would set me back about 290 € and form a solid basis for future upgrades.

I was leaning towards taking this route already, but since I am never quite sure exactly where the bottleneck is with my rig I am very grateful for any informed input. :)

I say your game will run acceptable but you can forget about setting everything to the max.
You will be playing with medium settings to keep the game playable (you have almost the same as I have now, your GPU is weaker but your CPU is a bit stronger).

Hi, i've been trying to play the campaign but my framerate is too low even when i set everything to medium.

I can run Battlefield 3 and Max Payne 3 without problems but this game just keeps stuttering. It doesn't make sense with my specifications...

i7 860 @ 2,8 Ghz
8 GB DDR3 @ 1600 Mhz
ATI 5830 1GB
OCZ Agility 3 128GB SSD

And yes i run it from my SSD, or could that be the problem?

I'm now at the point where i put everything on medium and AA and post process on low.

EDIT: Ok, omg it turns out i was still using the beta executable because i played that DayZ mod.
Only now i want to play the campaign, but it freezes at a certain time. (I mean i can play for 30 minutes or so and then it freezes) I have decent performance now though.

Gentlemen
For all those who have questions asking whether your computer can run any game in the Arma series, or any game for that matter, here is a nice program that will scan your computer and give you a brief report on if your computer can run a game of your choice, it will list what hardware components can run the game, and which ones fail, its a very simple tool to help give you some feedback on your situation with your computer.

See the program here:

Can U Run It?

Foxhound maybe we can sticki this post somewhere so we can reduce or prevent
new posts asking if their computer can run this Arma game or that.

Hi!

I don't want to start a new topic about my "problem" and this one is the closest I've found so far. I'm planning to upgrade my PC and I doN't really play on it, only the ArmA series. So if anyone can give me some advice on what to buy (graphics card, CPU and an SSD drive) for Arma 3? I doN't want to spend too much, 200-300 Dollars max.

Thank you in advance!
