I should probably start this off by saying I am not very experienced with Arma. I love certain aspects of the game, no matter how much I lack in skill or knowledge of the game as a whole. Hence, I couldn't say I understood if the pinned topic could apply to my situation, sorry.

I had already purchased Arma 2 on disc but last night, due to my own exhaustion and the lure of a good Steam deal, I managed to impulse buy Operation Arrowhead. I know, I was probably better off buying CO off the deal, don't beat me up about it.

I can run it on its own, and all is fine and dandy, but I was curious as to whether I could run it as Combined Operations with my non-Steam Arma 2 - just for ease of use?

Yes, you can combine retail Arma 2 with Steam OA.
On the BI forums is a massive topic with loads of Steam info and help:
