Opteryx is working in a new map called Sakakah Al Jawf

* Description:
Sakakah is a Saudi city located in the northern Al Jawf provinces, found the city while scouring Iraq (actually) for cities of usable size in ArmA. The city is ca. 50% original size, this is caused for the most part due to game play purposes and some for actually being able to ever finish it, but it's still a pretty big city compared to anything else seen in ArmA.

The main purpose of creating it was to bring something similar to that seen in the VBS terrain modules, but still playable with ArmA's non optimized objects( although that remains to be seen..).

* Development Notes:
For Opteryx it runs in a similar frame rate as Sahrani and sometimes even better, he hasn't really done much testing but it seems playable.

As you've probably have noticed the terrain is rather flat and monotonous, this is due to that Visitor has a bug in the release candidate where's manual terra forming doesn't get saved, this is also a very good reason for me being reluctant to release it at this state, hopefully a full Visitor release is imminent.

Another thing is that the Satellite image looks rather monotonous too, originally he tried using some real satellite imagery, but being a crap PS user didn't get me very far, so reluctantly he had to resort to making my own. He might try and give the Sat map some variation somewhere in the future, but He's not promising anything due to the fact that it requires some rather good PS skills and is quite time consuming.

Looks very good indeed.

I have been following Opteryx`s post on the BIS forums as he stands out as one of the people who are making serious progress on the V3 front.

I followed his and other posts and manged to get my head around V3 and the process needed now to get a map in game.

I have two real life sat maps and relevant terrain ready but at the minute I am not going to commit too much time until the proper release of V3.

I agree with Fox, the scenery is looking very much like the island we have with TP3 in VBS. throw a few of the towers we have just had included with QG and we are nearly there :)

And dont forget the "monster" rubble :lol
Good to hear you are on this kind of stuff again JB, I know what you can make (remember the "unreleased VBS1 island) so this could be very interesting for the community :)

New video available:

BTW Opteryx wants to make sure everyone knows this is NOT an island. The land never stops, you are not surrounded by water.

An open beta has been releaased by Opteryx.

Opteryx : Sakakah is based on a real city in the norther province of Al Jawf Saudia Arabia, I found the city while scouring for cities in Iraq that could be useful. What I liked most about the city was the generally good spacing between each district, block and individual houses, so I though I might have a go at recreating it in ArmA. However once I realized how big it actually was I made a decision to scale it down to about 1:2 size, this was quite possibly a wise choice now that I see how much effort is need to even reach a playable version. It shouldn't really be called "Sakakah Al Jawf", but I felt just Sakakah was a bit dry and Al Jawf rings a bit better after the city name, but you can call it Sakakah or whatever you want to.

This is an OPEN BETA, I would like to make that very clear to people, this version does not represent final version at all, I hope to change a lot of things on this map before being deemed final. Purpose of this open beta is to gather as much feedback and performance data as possible from a wider audience, initially I had planned a closed beta, but after a bit o' thinking I'd figure it'd be better to keep it open for the purpose of getting a vaster amount of feedback.

You can download the open beta from this page.

Juhuuu nice guys,i'm downloading now.I will update my opinion if the download is complete.And ehmm...the Screens and the Video are looking nice,like in Iraq :D

EDIT:Ok..i just tested your Island,it's cool,but now i will give you some detailed feedback.

You should use some diffrent Ground or Terrain Textures (look at Iran/Iraq Island),and i don't like the Sand Textures of your Island.The good thing is,you put some detailed buildings with fences etc. (like in Iraq) it's a very well done job.And i like the long streets,they are looking like Highways in Iraq.You should put some "more" street lights along the Highway in the south..ehmm...and you should make some mountains around the Island,becuz if you fly out of the Map its become unrealistic,but hey dude,i know it's a WIP or Beta,what ever,keep working.And thank you for this Island.I bet it will be kickass Island when it's done.And thats only my Feedback,i'm happy about your work.

Very nice, gets better every time ;)

My only gripe is the monotonous ground texture. I'm sure this will be fixed in future though. Considering the scale of the project this is still very much in its infancy.

Well done to opteryx (im just waiting for the post where opteryx tells us he can no longer give updates as he now works for BIS :con )
