Hi folks,

i've made a different version of my Dynamic viewdistance addon. Basically this version does not check for players level above ground but for level above sea level.

What's the difference to the already released version?
Well, now it also raises viewdistance if you climb a mountain. The previous version didn't care about coast or mountain. As long your feet touched the ground, viewdistance wasn't changed at all.

What is the benefit of this new method?
Basically, while flying above bumpy terrain, viewdistance could go up and down in short intervalls as height above ground was changing rapidly sometimes. With this new method it should be smoother and also flying close above mountain peaks will not decrease viewdistance for a few seconds.

Why is it considered experimental?
Because i need to know how this method affects performance. As you had before a constant min viewdistance now you'll almost always have a raised viewdistance if you're not swimming all the time. Even Paraiso is a few meters above ground and therefor the viewdistance is raised. So i would be glad if some could test this experimental version and give some feedback.

So what do i need to replace to use this version?
Just replace the old pbo with the new one. Make a backup first or move it to a save place. The settings in the .hpp file are the same as before. Only thing is, minViewDistance reflects now viewdistance you'll have at sea level. Maybe goin 100 or 200 meters below your actual settings would help to safe performance. You'll have to try.

My name is Foxhound and i would like to add this to the downloads and write a News about it. can i?
Not yet, first i would have some feedback. If i think it's ready to, i'll msg you to do so. ;-)

So where can i get this experimental thing?

Here: DynVD final & signed

Ok NOW i have tested the "experimental" version and it works exactlly as good as the "AIR" version (former version) but now it changes the VD even when you are on the ground. Have tested it during an hour and well, i love it. Gives me great performance when im driving up and down the valleys and when im flying. Must addon for everyone! 10 stars.

@BIS: Make this an option in ArmA please.

EDIT: Its so nice to finally be able to fly planes for real. I made my settings after what Myke told me and in this pic i have just escaped some SAMs trying to take me out. Im at altitude 2000 meters and the Dynamic VD have smoothly expanded the view to 8000 meters! And without lag! Enjoy.

I noticed that the F18 figher jets dont take advantage of this addon. Maybe becuase the F18 addon not use Extended Eventhandlers? It should be fixed however. So nice to see the Nimitz far far away in the background while you fight. Nicer to land when you see it far away as well, more planning time ;) The F18 works perfect when DynVD is activated, but it doesnt take advantage of the juicy dynamic view distance.

Regards
Alex

erm...the version which is topic here is slightly different from what you have tested. The version you have (and which is @ downloads available) changes viewdistance related to player level above ground. So no matter if you're at shore or on mountains peak.

The version you can download above DOES matter because it changes viewdistance according to players level above sea. So you'll get higher viewdistance on a 600 meter mountain than at the beach.

Not yet, Big. Would have some testing on this one because i would like to know how's the impact on performance since it uses slightly other method to adjust viewdistance. Also i would make it signed. If it makes it through my "quality control", it should replace the actuall listed Dynamic Veiwdistance XEH.

Done, now this version will be the final version and should replace both previous.

Changes: as described above the raise of viewdistance is now related to players height above sea level so already goin from the beach to Paraiso raises viewdistance and also even more if you climb some of the mountains of Sahrani.

Also finally i've managed to make it signed.

Shall we remove the other one and just add this one?

CAuse the readme says:

It is related with players height above ground.

And this one above sea level, doesn't it?

I have updated the news and the download page (not released yet) but I think you forgot to include the sign files (sign pbo as well as the key) ;)

[edit]
Released, you can find our download page here:

Excellent work Myke. As you probably already thought I couldnt try this, but I sure will. This sounds exactly what I was looking for :)

For those who dont read readme's or/and before you think this addon isnt for you - read the following:

You can change the values in the .HPP file (wich goes into the Arma/Dta folder). And it should be played around with to find the best smooth VD change for your computer.

The formula is MAX-MIN/ALTITUDE

Example:
4000-1200/1000=2,8 (2,8 meters VD expansion/shrink for every 1 meter you go up/down, and when altitude 1000 meters is reached you have 4000 VD)

Get the 2,8 to an even lower number by changing the MAX to lower value or the ALTITUDE to a higher value. You will find something that suits your computer. ;)

See you in the skies.
/Alex

Ok, reworked the whole thing and need some testers now.

Major changes:
- Actual FPS is measured and if it goes too low, viewdistance is lowered, trying to get at acceptable FPS.
- Viewdistance raises and falls slower now, noticable on fast climbings and dives. But it helps on fast airport approaches.
- Introduced hint for config purposes. Shows FPS, Actual viewdistance and viewdistance it tries to reach. Should be disabled after configuring as it would interefere with mission-relevant hints.

The file is not signed yet or "officially" released before i have a few feedbacks about it.

I haven't downloaded this yet but I want to know if this takes a lot of FPS off?
