I've gotten a bunch of the islands working, fairly easily:
All the islands from ArmaI that are marked as no AddOns required for use, require the AddOn files, from ArmA I: plants.pbo, buildings.pbo, roads.pbo, rocks.pbo, signs.pbo. After those are installed (with their respective keys) the islands seem to work. I get a few error messages here and there, but they seem fine... sort-of.
EDIT: Buildings.pbo has a single error, but other than that, things run smoothly. Sahrani and Sara-Lite, plus Nevada Scenery, Area 51, and Gott Island I have quickly tested to find they work. Though, there are errors.
(Sahrani has a few textures and other things missing that are probably in ArmA I's ca.pbo; which, when I tried to use it, caused a CTD)

Sorry if this question indicates my ARMA2 inexperience, but I've done searches in the forums and have not found a solution. I installed the fantastic looking KingTiger mod into ARMA2 v1.03 but when I try to preview a map in which I've placed one, ARMA2 crashes with the message that an error with the crew exists. Do I need to enter something into the init of the KingTiger unit to make it work?
PZ, what u must do is place the soldier you want to play as and then place like 3 or 4 crewmembers and place the EMPTY version of the Kingtiger, the configuration files in ArmA 1 addons target crews that no longer exists. hope this helps you
EDIT: Man, I'm just plain stupid - worked on it some more until I was able to get the tank actually empty - that did the trick. Thanks again.
Thank you for responding typer4171. I think there might be something wrong with my arma2 installation or something. Here is what I tried:
1. placed a unit as player on the map, then added 3 crewmen. then placed a tank near them on the map
2. did the same, but added grouping lines
3. the same as above, but put the player and crew on top of the tank
Each scenario resulted in the same "invalid crew" message after arma2 crashed.

The WW1 camel and Fokker planes work kinda, the camel you can get in but its unable to takeoff (i had the ai get in it and I did two you just go to the end of the runway and crash) and the Focker niether I nor the AI could get in it (i placed them both as an empty)

Yes, but you need to know where the scripts are to unlock the vehicle, as they are not built into the car ( i think you need to use the policemen from the pack but all units, if not ALMOST all units don't work in arma 2)
