Although ArmA2 has been released I would guess the Armed Assault MP scene will be active for a long time.
The MP community is not as big as the BF or COD community. This is a whole different game. There are good public servers out there which will give you a lot of fun time and for the best experience you should just search for an excellent clan server which is well organized or join a tournament for example.
However, if you live in an out-of-the-way place such as Australia, you may find that there are no servers available with a low enough ping to warrant joining. Other than that, LAN parties with this game are pretty good.
Do you have the game already? If not, I wouldn't buy it if you are planning on doing a BF2 run for the chopper, followed by taking on their entire team. This game really requires patience and teamwork. And has a very clunky control system, which can be very annoying to adapt to. That said, it is a brilliant game nontheless.
Any of the BIS games require a different mindset than gun-and-run games like BF2, CoD, etc. Twitch skills are largely worthless. You have to learn to pace yourself, be patient, use cover and concealment, and most importantly work effectively in teams. That's a death sentence for most FPS players, who just want to blast stuff and "pwn" people - too bad, all broke up about it. :)
Alias' comment on control system is just an opinion, it does take getting used to for sure. Also A2 is supposedly back to using the OFP controls - something most players seem happy about.
