The first solution is obvious: "Don't shoot your own guys", yes, yes thank you for the advice. But sometimes it happens in a fight anyway. The problem (aside from kicking your own butt and doing the enemies' job for them) is the AI dropping the "GD bomb" when it does happen. Also when you run out of ammo. I don't want to retire from Arma II, but I might have to if every mission I have to hear God's name profaned.

Does anybody know how to disable this? What codes need to be edited??

Thanks,
David.

Hi and :welcome to Armaholic

I think you will have to edit the original files, or create an addon which overwrites what is being said in game. No idea how to do that, sorry. I do not know anything about addon making.

Check our download section, if I am correct an addon changing what is being said was released some time ago. it should be under addons/sounds.
But, I have no idea if the language used in it will not offend you, you will have to test for yourself.

BTW, I see you use multiple accounts. I assume I can delete the other one? Using multiple accounts is not allowed.

Affirmative. I made a typo in my email address on the first attempt. I do not have a gmaiol.com account! :blush

I'll check out the sound mods, thanks.

EDIT: Nada. Thanks anyway.

Try this one:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6032

It reduces the voices, so they are still present but at least wont bother you that much (I hope) :)

Well, I actually did retire from ArmA 2 completely for a couple reasons.

1) It was getting way too addictive (surprise, surprise).
2) The text chatter on the bottom left still displayed profanities on occasion. (A problem that my firend tells me has been eliminated since the updated ACE2)
3) Injured guys still use obscene language periodically.

I looked at it this way: If I, a God fearing man would not play this game in front of my wife and kids, then I am a hypocrite if I play it at all (in front of my Heavenly Father).

BUT! You know what? It hit me on my ride home from work one day: The files for the troop groans are probably .ogg files within one of the default .pbos. What I can do is use PBOview to locate and extract them, then edit them to remove the foul language, then repack the .pbo.

I re-installed the game, downloaded PBOview and took a look but I can't seem to find the files linked to the troops speech. I looked first in "characters.pbo, characters2.pbo, language.pbo, languagemissions.pbo, sound.pbo and soundmissions.pbo, then in misc, misc2 and misc3.pbo and NOTHING! All I could find in sounds.pbo are ".wss. files. What are those?

Please, Foxhound or anyone else who may have the knowledge, if someone is aware of where to find the files I am looking for, please tell me so that I can get back into this otherwise incredibly cool game (without my conscience tearing a strip off me).

Thanks.

EDIT: To be clear, it is point number three that is the concern. The injured guys running around going "My f@&$ing leg!" and such. Anybody know how to fix this?

I think with the above method you will experience troubles joining MP servers as you tempered with the origianal files. But, if you just use this for SP I guess its fine.

Anyway, thanks a lot for taking the time to post your solution to your problem ;)

I can sympathise with you. While the language is all too common in the military, it is quite distressing at times to hear it coming from the AI and not having an option to silence it.

In the long run it'd be better to nerf the language via a patch addon that just defines the sounds and language strings to be nil. That way you could play SP and MP in a cleaner fashion as well.

I am fear.

My friend and I only ever play together so it won't be an issue.

Anyway, thanks a lot for taking the time to post your solution to your problem ;)

Your welcome. It's the least I could do after all your kindness. Actually I could do more.

Would you be so kind as to explain this to me. I honesty haven't the foggiest notion how to implement this, but it does sound quite nice.

What I describe is basically how a mod like ACE manages to change the game. What you initially did was 1/3 of the way there anyway and just needed some refining. If you are willing to take the step into making your change a real mod, it would work far better.

I'm going to have do a little hand-waving here, just to put things into simple terms so you can decide if it's worth it.

Making a mod is like making a legal contract or purchase order, you fill out certain forms in a certain order and bundle up the paperwork for the system to process and give you what you want. The overall bundle is the pbo file, an archive of data, scripts, and definitions.

The master file in a pbo is either called config.bin or config.cpp. The bin version is just a specially prepared version of config.cpp that is easier for ArmA to process, either file will do. In development you'd create/modify the config.cpp file and then if you wish "binarize" it to create the config.bin when ready to release. The tools for all this are free to download from BI and should be available here on Armaholic if I recall.

Inside config.cpp are the "forms" used to define what you want to do. They are organized in classes that operate on one area of A2 and can contain more specific classes that focus in on a given detail. The classes begin with the word "class", then a specific name, and then perhaps some definitions that are enclosed in a pair of braces - { }. Statements and the class itself end in a semicolon to tell A2 you are done with this section of work.

For your work...

0. Decide on a name for your mod, I'll use CLM, short for Christian Language Mod.

1. Make a folder to hold your work. All your files sit in there. I'll use the name clean_language.

2. Create a file call $PBOPREFIX$. Open with notepad and put in one line to define where your mod lives in A2 terms. Do not hit return at the end of this line - A2 hates that in this special file.

x\clm\addons\clean_language

3. Now create config.cpp and open that with notepad.

Your first class is cfgPatches. That tells A2 you are modifying something and how it relates to other stuff.

class CfgPatches {
   class clm_clean_language {
      units[] = {};
      weapons[] = {};
      requiredVersion = 1.01;
      requiredAddons[] = {"CA_Anims", "CA_Anims", "CA_Anims_Sdr", "CA_Anims_Wmn", "CA_Anims_Char", "CACharacters", "CACharacters2"};
   };
};

4. Then additional classes to redefine the sounds. It would look very much like a section of the definitions in the original pbo you modified with the sound file names changed to "".

5. Turn that into a pbo like you did before, install it in @CLM\addons as clean_language.pbo and if done correctly you will have your changes.

I am fear.

Wow! That's some excellent info. Thank you for your time and effort in explaining all of this. I'm somewhat busy, but I'll see if I can learn how to do this stuff over time and hopefully get this implemented and released.

In fact, I'm working on a campaign as well (Catholic State vs. Antichrist NWO/Chemwar). It requires lots of addons, though... Down the road it may see the light of day and be released publicly as well.

Glad it helped.

Best of luck on the mission as well. A good mission is like any other form of art, it takes time, sweat and sometimes pain to bring it to fruition.

I am fear.

irongrip1 :I looked at it this way: If I, a God fearing man would not play this game in front of my wife and kids, then I am a hypocrite if I play it at all (in front of my Heavenly Father).

I was thinking about this and I want to clarify: I was not meaning to suggest that I have a wife and kids, but was proposing this as an illustration to help others to relate to my thinking - and maybe get them thinking similarly, especially if they have kids.

this is a very informative and long thread about a simple little thing. quite interesting actually.

just wanted to make a comment. because i couldn't resist;

When I play arma2 in on my living room computer, my son often watches me. He is very exited about the helicopters and the armored vehicles with the big cannons and such. After seeing me play Arma he has started to get a lot of interest in "Guns". And he has never repeated either me or Arma saying thinks like "My F*cking leg" but I guess its just a matter of time before he will.

My point is that "Killing people of different nationalities, military or civilian" is to a sinful thing for god fearing men. (me not included. as i am not a christian)
Getting pleasure and joy from killing in a game. that is truly the road to hell and Satan.

Btw: Good Idea about the language patch you want to make.. some people actually would have use for it.

Sorry if I'm going to far off topic.

Good luck with your projects
