Hello. As some of you may know, Prison Life has been postponed due to lag issues. Blaze2132 and I have been attempting to fix the problem, but are hopelessly stumped on what is causing the problem. It is not the amount of scripts, or the ambient civilians module, and it may very well be just our internet. One thing that may be causing it is our use of so many if-then statements. some of our scripts get to (literally) thousands of lines long because of all the if-then statements. We also have if-then statements inside if-then statements, we hypothesized that this is also another reason.

Anyways, I opened this post up so people could post things that are confirmed to cause server lag, and also help solve our problem. In the meantime, Blaze and I are still using trial and error to find the problem.

Is it a dedicated server I presume?
Check out the players pings themselves. Firefox usually will lag a computer up, so its probably more playerside. For the server, it also might be that if its a dedi or hosted off one of your machines.

Danger close is not an option. Its default.

it is a dedicated server run on my computer. we also tested it non dedicated and it lagged again except this tme it was worse

Added 1 hour 17 minutes later:

quitting firefox during play didnt help either, i get 6 fps by myself and 0 fps when i play with others.

would if-then statements inside if-then statements cause lag? and would multiple if-then statements cause lag?

** moved to the correct section. There is nothing wrong with your game, its editing related.

Your hosting a dedi on the same PC you play the game on? I guess thats issue one.
Get a seperate PC, use that to run the dedi and join it with your other (gaming PC). Also, if your connection is not up to it you should not even bother hosting a dedi. Your asking for troubles.
If you do not want to buy/rent a dedi just to start of your project be nice and ask some server admins you know if they are willing to put your mission on their server so you can test it and see if the lag persits.

Every line of script will have an effect, some more than others.
You need to work out what needs to be running right now and turn off the other stuff, it all comes down to structure.

If statements inside if statements may or may not cause lag, they add to the lag if the first is true but shouldn't if it's not.

One of the big time wasters is nearestobject type commands as they have to search sometimes hundreds of objects over large areas.

Also when spawning stuff try and stagger it by using delays and also try and add delays on all repeating scripts and make them as large as you can get away with.
