I finally completed building my dream PC Xmas and have been playing arma2 ever since. I feel like I'm so uneducated when it comes to this game. With all these add-ons, and mods, and player created missions, I truly don't know where to begin. I really want to experience the full capacity of this game so any advice from seasoned players out there would be greatly appreciated!!! I know I should complete the sp campaign before any of this but then what do I do??? What programs do I need?? Im a noob help!!! ps: Thank You!!!

I don't know anyone who buys arma for the single player campaign, generally considered not that good.

there are two programs that make modding your game easy that id recommend:

Six Updater:
http://www.six-updater.net/

or

Arma II Launcher:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8241

You can use these to mod your game:

Six Updater has a list off all mods on its servers this makes it easy to find mods, but its a bit complex you need to read the read me on it;
Arma2 launcher is easy to use and you can download mods @MOD from this website under the downloads.

Ace2 is the best Mod I feel, start there. http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8602. You can combine mods we in my clan use this list of mods witch brings the best UK forces mods together. http://www.4thdragoons.com/index.php/about-us.

ACRE is a good thing to look at too it a plug in to Team Speak and adds radio and realistic communication http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=11339

Have fun

Hello BirdsVendetta, Welcome to Armaholic forums, and welcome to Armaverse.
BIS forums is the developer's forums for the game series, you may want to register there too:
http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?4-BI-MILITARY-GAMES-FORUMS

As for the game,
The following is what I suggest you do:
familiarize yourself with the features of the game itself, learn the factions, setup your controls, basically get in the game.
1. Start with the tutorial missions (scenarios)to familiarize yourself with some things.

2. Another faster way, at least to me to learn the game is to get into the Singleplayer editor, it takes very little to be ingame, just go to sp editor-->choose a map--> double click on the map to place a player (you), and press save then press preview which puts you in the game, from there you can shoot your guns, learn your controls, move about and just get acquainted.

3. Another suggestion is dont worry about addons, mods, or missions, or anything else just yet til you have have setup your controls, and become familiar with how the game works, and at least played with it a bit. The game has a large learning curve, there is ALOT to learn, even some of us vets are still learning and discovering various ways of doing things, and or doing things better.
=================
Some terminology for you:
-Scenarios are basically missions
-campaign is a campaign
-islands are also known as maps, and or vice versa
-Addons are new content that can be added to the game, addons are considered units (soldiers), vehicles, planes, tanks, ect,. Addons also can be a small added feature, or new function in the game. All addons are created by fellow community players/members.

-Mods, are larger, if not huge versions of addons, the majority are total conversions of the game.

All content that you can download and add to your game is free, you only pay for the game itself.
===============
other points
-If you want to play the campaign then do so, theres no requirements for anything.
Theres no wrong way to play this game, its not a linear based game where you have to do this before you do that, you can do anything you want. theres no order of game you need to play to get the full picture of what happens next, it dont work like that.

-The community is worldwide, and is massive, like global massive, theres players, and members of the community from around the world.

-Armaholic here is a huge website, ran by a few members of the community that have been in it for a long time, if not since the beginning of the series, here you can download everything you need or want for your game, be it addons, mods, patches, scripts, tools, ect,.
There are some other websites like Armaholic, to me Armaholic is one of the best, most complete and up to date, that just my preference of course.
=================================
Questions
What we need to know so we can better help you is do you own any of the games yet? if so what do you have?

I have arma2/arma2OA I would like to start playing multiplayer missions but i am inexperienced with the installing the required add-ons ie:ace/acre. I have installed six updater and arma2 launcher and have begun to familiarize myself with them but I honestly have no clue what I'm doing so i do not want to begin to d/l or install anything yet.

Your going to want to have the following if you want to go the mp route:

1. Make sure you have Arma2CO setup also known as Combined Ops, as most servers are combined ops.
To setup combined ops:

1. Install A2 & run once
2. Install OA & run once
3. Update OA using the 1.60 patch
4. Update OA using the 1.62 patch

but I honestly have no clue what I'm doing so i do not want to begin to d/l or install anything yet.
Good choice, you'll only confuse yourself more, like i said in my previous post, start with the sp scenarios, theres training tutorials to help you better learn the game, your going to want to learn to setup your controls too. Believe me when i say this, you'll be lucky if anyone stops playing in a mission on a mp server all because your asking how to do something in the game and or for the mission.

Learn the basic controls, and setup your game should be your priority, avoiding this step will only add to the confusion and maybe add some frustration to the game, as I said the game has a huge learning curve, you have to take one step at a time, and dont rush into things. Alot of people will give you advice but what there not telling you is what you need to figure out from your perspective, which means your new to the game, so like driving a car whats the first thing they teach you in divers ed? The rules of the road? or what do the instruments, and controls do?

Start there.
Start with bootcamp do the controls mission, then do the other tutorial missions, and then if you want try the campaign, or even go into the editor, go for it, if you want to do mp then I have a informative guide you can read, it will tell you where to start, what to look for, how to join, whats required ect,.
G et the basics of the controls down, they are setup like no other game!
