Is there enough of a multiplayer following to still buy ArmA II? I have zero interest in playing dayz. Im just looking for a great multiplayer experience.

If there is a good following in ArmA II anymore, what software do i need to buy? just combined ops?

Or is it to the point where everyone is moving on to III. which i dont believe i have a viable system for III yet. here are my specs if someone wants to make an opinion on it.

Intel Q8200 (QUAD). OC 3.07GHZ stable. 4gb ddr 3 1333 OC
NVIDIA GTX 460 reference 1gb
what will be a OCZ Vertex 3 as soon as it gets back from RMA.

Thanks in advance.

Well, Arma 3 is not yet officially released (currently it is just an alpha test version) and I am sure Arma 2 will live on longer than just a few months due to the massive ammount of additional content you can get for it.

But, with your system specs I think you should be ok with Arma 3 as well.
So, it purely comes down on what you want yourself.

So the question then is, what pieces of software do i need to buy for arma 2. are all expansions in use or just a few. for instance... days just requires combines ops right? i dont plan to play dayz. but do i need to buy every expansion?

Well, you should at least get Arma 2: Combined Operations just so you have access to all the fun without issues.
The additional DLC is free of choice. If you want to support the dev, buy it. If you are short of cash, just patch your game up to the latest version and you get the Lite versions of both the PMC and the BAF DLC.
ACR Lite is a sepeperate patch (not sure if that also goes with Steam though).

When you use the latest beta you can filter out all DayZ servers, that should give you a better view of normal servers.
