I saw a reference to "texture swapping" in a discussion recently, and I know it has to do with increasing performance (ram usage?), but what exactly is meant by "texture swapping"?

It might be me but doesn't texture swapping have to do with something different than game performance?
It more of like an editing thing as far as I know, a way to change textures on a model or the way they are displayed.

There was mention of it at the BI forum, in a thread concerning problems with Arma and video ram, and someone had expressed that he didn't like the texture swapping introduced in v1.09 as a way around that issue. His point was that the texture swapping reduces eye candy.

I also read in the downloads comments (I think) how if you have 1.09 you won't need the "LowPlants" mod, I'm assuming that's because of this texture swapping function.

Ahh I see what you are aiming add.
You might be familair with the problems GPU's have with Arma causing the game to crash if you alt-tab or have been playing for a long while.
You could "fix" this with the maxmem command and in game "flush" your card's memory but I dont think those were good solutions.
Probably BI have introduced some texture swaps with the upcoming patch making the game perform much better but indeed it might have some negative results on the eye candy.

I havent tested the 1.09 patch very much (I hardly have time to play anyway so if I do I dont feel like testing) but I would prefer better performance over eyecandy......but thats my opinion.
But again, its not something you as a user can manage in the option screen as far as I know :)

Yes that's the topic I had read about, and I agree, as long as texture swapping gets around the memory problem, that's more important to me than perfect graphics. I'm just wondering if it's noticeable in game as textures "swap" or if it's a seemless process. That's my concern.
