UN Units 2030

by Sabre[Dust]
V. 1.20

Just another simple retexturing addon to add a few UN Units to A3.

Maybe some of you have some requests or suggestions. I think I saw someone asking for UN units a while ago but can't find the thread anymore. Anyway here it is.

A few examples:

I updated my really simple retexture addon UN2030.

From the mod.cpp / Readme:
This is a simple Retexture Addon adding the UN Faction with various fictional units and uniforms.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ethiopian units were added as these are currently the top UN contributing nations.
It is a work in progress so not every feature or texture is finished. Some were actually done in a hurry
More detailed textures will be added in the future. I promise : )

UN Units is released under Arma Public License (APL)
Play around with it, modify it as you wish as long as you give credit : )
You may extract textures and use them in your missions using the setobjecttexture command if you want.
It will work with most units.

Whats new compared to the older version:
- Independent faction Plugin (drag/drop faction plugin into addon folder to use)
- readded old uniforms (in UN box)

Features:
-adds a bluefor/indep UN Faction
-many vanilla units got a UN retexture of variable quality (see first pic)
-Altis, generic Woodland, generic Desert, Ethiopian, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indian UN Troops
-A few Vests and Helmets, Hats and other things
-Limited Zeus automatic support (AAF UN Faction)

Credits:
-Nevbox texture templates (used for some of the uniforms)
-Uninamer for testing
-Ranwer for scripting input

Issues:
my crude disarming script for the MQ4 won't work on dedicated server

Nice just last night I was looking for some UN troops. The only ones I found where in the African conflict mod, and thats a little to large to download just for the UN stuff.

The APC textures look good as well as the fabric effect on the helmets.

A Suggestion: Some retextured/ported BMP's, BTR's MI8's and URAL Transports from Arma2 would be good to see as rarely do western army's contribute troops to the UN, maybe with some Pakistani / Indain Troops to go in them.

Looking forward to the end product :).

Thanks for the input Big_Wilk.

Yes the APC is fine, I'm struggling to get the CRV and Leopard look similar.
Fun fact about the helmet is I that whatever you slap on it, the model takes care of the fabric effect by itself.
That's very good as I am a bit lazy when it gets to details : )

That's my texture right now. The pattern you can see there is barely visible ingame.

That's how it looks ingame.

About porting units I have no clue how to do it yet. I want have a look at the Arma 2 US Helicopters import mod to see how it's done and I want to see how far I can get for the Mi17.

There's a port of a BMP too and it sure doesn't look easy : )

For now I will probably stick with the A3 units but I'd also prefer the old units to be honest. That's something for a later stage.

An Update:

added desert and urban aaf camo variants for variety and because it was easy enough for me to do.

Urban variant (heli pilot, crew, tank crew):

Good point about the country of origin.
I have invented a new nation (somewhere from around the himalayan region).
Still without a proper name Let's call it Nepukitia for the time beeing

Uniform and Beret (Arma duplicates the countries flag on both sleeves no matter what I do. As far as I understand the country would be on the left arm, the UN Badge on the right in reality. Well here it is a little different, best I could do):

Leopard getting to where I want it, as is the CRV:

Interesting...

I'm wondering how to actually use them in a mission? The UN guys have a way of showing up (well maybe - if they can get the councils to agree on who will foot the bill...meaning not them) but never quite making a difference...kinda like Paul Blart in Mall Cop. All the good intentions in the world but no resolve or actual authority.

Would it be appropriate to add some static "aftermath of genocide" and refugee camps to go along with the theme. And each unit should have plenty of cigarettes to smoke. This will help them pass time while the real fighting is going on outside their compound.

Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Congo, Somalia, Syria
(http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/55875/max-boot/paving-the-road-to-hell-the-failure-of-u-n-peacekeeping)

Sorry gotta call like I see it. Just saying. I guess they could make good hostage units...

;-)

Thanks MetalWolf, your english is fine! I will make a beta release soon and post it here.
The helicopters need some work still, the other units are more or less ok.

About scenarios/missions: Yea well I never thought so far really. I was just driving around OA in an UN BMP or Mi8 a lot in custom Domination missions and was kind of missing that in A3.
I will add a Zeus Mission with the units enabled so anyone can do what they feel like with this easily.

Myself, I am actually using these Units together with the WAP mod / Zeus : )

These units look pretty good!

I would be down with making a mission or two for these units! PM me if you are interested.

Next step public testing. Since I am quite new to the addon making I hope you can give me some helpful hints and ideas.

This all really started off as a spinoff to my civilian units ambulance part - I had changed a few units colors to white already, so it was a logical thing to do i guess : )
It is already way larger than I ever intended.

As Big_Wilk pointed out it would be a lot nicer to have BMPs, MIs and Urals - but for the time being we will have to stick with this.

Dropbox Link for UN Units Alpha outdated, see later post

BISign and Keys will be added at a later time.
If you want to test it in MP I have Zeus with the UN Units on my testserver.

Known Issues:
- the light vest switches color from afar - as I have been told that's an issue BI has to fix.
- Mora retexturing wont work for the third layer and so I went with the wheeled bluefor APC - also a hidden selection issue.
- Most Units need a little more work on the texture details / brightness

Oh and thanks for the offer Baddazs. Right now I want to keep it as a simple unit addon - but if you have any suggestions from a mission makers point I will be happy to see what I can do. If you or anyone else want to make campaigns around this addon please go ahead

Is that ready for a public release (on the frontpage) or do you first want to get some feedback and testing done before we do that?

# SabreD : Hi Foxhound,

I will be happy to leave feedback just downloaded now

Added 1 hour 53 minutes later:

Just a suggestion Pakistani troops? "The Pakistani military has played a key role in the UN's peacekeeping programme in different parts of the world, most prominently in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Bosnia, Congo and Liberia. Currently, Pakistan stands as the largest[dubious – discuss] contributor of troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions in the world, and is followed by Bangladesh and India.[1]!" taken from wikipedia. http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2011/08/2011887622615886.html there is a picture there and one here http://pakarmedforces.com/2014/04/join-pakistan-army-as-soldier-2014.html hope you take this into consideration.

Yes Xof, I am actually wondering if I shouldn't just make 2 different UN addons : )

1) UN Units 2030 with the A3 units more or less in the current state of the addon

2) UN Units 1990 with M113s, BMPs, Mi17s and Hueys and others as well as different uniforms (why not Pakistani)

that second one will be a long term project though : )

Just tested it out, it looks good.

It seems logical to me to make a UN2030 and UN1990 as it saves some MB's for those who don't want the futuristic stuff and vice versa.

I just stuck a AK47 in this guys hand and they look fairly good. Would look ace with some Pakistani uniforms and BTRs ect.

Also some moded uniforms:
