UnderSiege Patches & Insignias

by
Siege-A

Details:

USP Patches - 4525 Unit Patches & Insignias

Required Addons: None
Signed: Yes, Server Key included

Description:

During the process of creating my own custom units, I came across the need for some specific unit patches. Which then turned into an entire project all in its own, as a few patches turned into a library. Seeing as how there aren't very many patch addons in the community currently, I decided to go ahead and begin adding as many patches and insignias as I possibly could to the game. Each and every patch tailored to 'near-perfection', so all would be presented in just as much quality as there is quantity. There are still tons more patches to be added, and with this first pack, I was more focused on U.S. patches, since those are the units I am currently working on. But, I do plan on adding in many more patches based off of different countries around the world. At some point, these packs may be split into separate addons, but that will be determined a bit later down the road.

If anyone has any requests for additional patches, feel free to ask as I don't mind adding in more. Hope you enjoy this small addition and I will try to keep updated as necessary. Thanks for the support.

VERSION 1.6:
1350 New Patches & Insignias Added. 4525 Total.

Not much to say, other than another patches update with tons more added. This update was mainly focused around adding all the country flags, which makes up about half of the pack, with each country flag coming in 3 variants (Frame, Name, & Shield). Also adding in 4 new pbo's for the countries of Greece, Iraq, Israel, and Pakistan. The Field Manual section for this addon has been updated to include better information regarding each individual pack. Started doing some cleanup with the classnames, so as always be sure to check the ClassList if having trouble.

Even though this was the biggest update so far, it still didn't quite fill all requests as I had thought. Time is wearing thin for me, so I decided to go ahead and pack what is done to at least get it released. More additions will be coming, to address some of the requests that were missed and to focus more directly on already included addon packs.

The roadmap for this addon, from version 1.6 to 1.7, will be to expand further upon included modules which have been neglected since introduced. As well as upgrading many of the outdated (128x) patches to 256x.

Hope you all enjoy this update, which is packed full of new morale patches for everyone, and some smaller additions to all previous categories.

    # Foxhound : Thank you very much for posting the release here and apologies for the delay but I was on holiday :-)

Absolutely no problem at all, Foxhound, I'm sure your holiday was well-deserved. ;) And thanks for posting the release.

    # NordicBloodHound : Great addon! What are the units that you are working on?

Thanks, Nordic. The units I am currently working on will cover all branches of service in the U.S. military, not necessarily every specific group. I will release a WIP thread soon, as I am getting closer to release of the first pack. But if you would like to view some of the work-in-progress, here's a link to the photobucket album (just hasn't been updated very recently): http://s993.photobucket.com/user/XxSiegeAxX/library/USA%20Armed%20Forces%20Project

If you have any questions, about the units or patches, feel free to shoot me a message.

Oh man! Fox! I've been trying to make patches for the longest time for Fox but I could never figure out how to shrink them down properly... I'm such a noob when it comes to image editing. Any tips on how to shrink down and even make subdued versions? Cause I'd like to get into making patches for units in my missions (And even re-texture units. But that's a different area all together. Start small first I am >_>) and hopefully campaign if I get around to it. Haha

Actually, Sigint, I don't subdue the patches myself, although it probably could be done, but I simply use whatever I can find on the web. Most popular patches already have good reference material that can be found for different colors, and subdued versions. I use GIMP to do all my photo-editing, as its free and a very good software, where you can then add your own touch to all of the patches. Each patch should be sized at 128x128 and converted to .paa for use in-game. I also like to give it some extra depth and clarity with some of the many tools GIMP has to offer.

If you need any tips or additional info, let me know, and hope you enjoy the addon.

@Siege....COuld you pull together a quick run down of what you do. I'm pretty handy with most Photo/ Editing software it's more a case of getting it right so that ARMA reads it in properly.

I've got some patches needed for UK Royal Marines etc.

No problem, mwnciboo. If you would like me to add the patches to this pack, please feel free to send them to me or post them here. But if you would like to create the patches yourself, either for private or public use, then I will give you a quick rundown of what I have done using GIMP photo-editing software. (If you do want to make them for private use, would you also be willing to send some to me which could be added for the public?)

    1. Create a transparency layer and edit the picture. Erase all background and surroundings, so only the patch itself remains. A good tip is to zoom-in/magnify the image to a workable level, which allows you to more easily edit the edges of the patch, this will allow you to catch any imperfections or background colors that are still attached, and any minor errors you make will be much harder to notice once zoomed back to normal levels.

    2. Autocrop the image (to get rid of excess canvas area which is not needed), then scale the image to 128x128.

    3. Apply a canvas layer, which gives the patch some extra detail and gives it the look of a stitched patch. You may also need to apply an unsharp mask to the patch, if it has lettering or details which are hard to see once it is shrunk in size.

    4. Apply a drop-shadow to the patch. This is all based on your own preference. I add the drop-shadow to my patches because it gives a 3D look to them once in-game, instead of just a flat patch.

    5. Now autocrop the image again, and scale it back to 128x128. Apply an antialias filter, which adds a bit of extra clarity to the image, and you're done.

    6. Now just export the image to .png format, where you will then re-open the exported image with tex-editor, and save it as a .paa file. All work beyond that, is through the config.cpp. If you would like a copy of the config I use, or help with it, just let me know.

Added 11 hours 23 minutes later:

Version 1.1 released. 110 New Patches & Insignias added, for a total of 410. First post updated.

I'll smash them out and send them to you, it probably makes things easier. But if you want specific British/ UK one's I'll get cracking.

    1st (priority) - Royal Marines
    2nd (eventually) - Paratroopers

3rd (if i get time) - Some Notable British units - SOme of these guys.. Enter text for the link here...

4th (way down the list) - Flyer boy patches etc.

PM me your private e-mail...I will get cracking.

@Siege-A, Thanks a lot for the advise. I got GIMP and it's awseome. This is what I was able to come up with.
