Hi, this is just a humble observation about the download pages; the install instructions are rather outdated.
There are mentions of Arma 3 Alpha and Steam Launch Parmeters... these things are now history.

With the official ArmA 3 launcher being available and so easy to use, it is surprising to see so outdated installation instructions on mod download pages. Some instructions are valid but this is mostly 2 years out of date now. The Steam launch parameter method is now especially redundant with the BIS launcher.

May I suggest a simple note on using the BIS launcher for installing local mods, because these old methods might confuse players new to arma. (Like my buddy who I had to rescue from trouble - he couldn't work out why certain mods where always launching - because he forgot about the steam launch params and he had mods listed there). The BIS launcher (or any other launcher) easily avoids this.

Maybe I can help?

EDIT
Revised instructions:

Sure, feel free to write some proper installation instructions.
But do it for both the old skool manual way as well as the official (no custom) launcher.
If you can/want add a few screen to clearify things.

Sure thing, happy to help. :-)

What do you mean by both methods? By "old skool way" do you mean with shortcuts or steam launch params? It seems daft that anyone would use the Steam parameter method nowadays, and I wouldn't really expect new players to want to use that method when the launcher is the first they see when clicking play on steam.

This is what I've done so far, however there's room for improvement.
How can I present the pictures in a better way? Like thumbnails that are next to each other, rather than below...
(I've left out the steam params because I really believe it's a redundant method.)

Let me know what you think, and perhaps we can make a new thread and example text for new mod releases?

Launch parameters are good for advanced users and server admins, but those people are capable of figuring it out by their self, so removing the parameters whould be a good idea.

Fox will probably adjust the images for you Tavish, but there is a way you can replicate it. You need to upload two images, one full sized and one cut to thumbnail size, then you wrap them like this:

Then you just put a space between each picture and you can get up to 4 aligned side by side:

Sometimes I like to think as I started the whole "earplugs" thing.

W0lle: The only advice I can give you is: Do not try to understand BI. You will not succeed and it only makes your brain go boom. I would even go so far and say that not even they understand their own actions :-D.

Thanks so far! I have read things and will get back to you about it this evening when I am back home :-)

Added 7 hours 37 minutes later:

# Tavish : How can I present the pictures in a better way? Like thumbnails that are next to each other, rather than below...

Do not bother creating small thumbs, I will do that for you ;-)

About the old skool method...I kindly ask you to write about how to do it anyway as still many people use it and for the reason explained by 654wak654.

and perhaps we can make a new thread and example text for new mod releases?

Once the new mod installation guidelines have been finsihed we can indeed start a new topic and sticky that instead of the older one.

Thank you very much for your cooperation and help! *OK*

@654wak654
Thanks for the tip 8-)

@Foxhound
No problemo.

I'll polish it and have something by the end of the weekend, and as you request, I'll add the -mod parameter guidelines :-)

I think a reformatting of the steam param guidelines will do. And like 654wak654 said, it's really just for advanced users nowadays, aka server admins, so maybe a clearly labelled spoiler perhaps? I'll do some examples.

Latest draft:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mod Installation Instructions
CLICK ON EACH SPOILER TO EXPAND

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I managed to get the pictures side by side but, you'll have to do the rest Foxhound, they don't seem to open properly. :-)

With the spoilers the amount of space used on the download page reduces significantly, and if I get time I'll redo the pictures too.

What do you think?

I think this is really great! :-)
Thank you very much for providing us with this clear and informative guide!

# Tavish : With the spoilers the amount of space used on the download page reduces significantly

I am actually considering removing all that info from the downloadpage. Its the same piece of text on all pages and that is (I knew that already but I did not really care previously) not really what google likes. It could be considered search engine spam.
So, I am thinking of doing it the way we had it before and linking to a page where the how-to is. That way the pages get shorter and the same text is not on all pages.
It wont be a FAQ as the new site will not have the same FAQ we use currently, instead I will add it as an article page.

You wrote this is a first draft. Should I wait for a more final version or can I use this already and simply update it when you update it?

Dont worry about the images!
Once I have added them to the page with our system you can see how they look and if you would like something changed we can do it than.

I will post the link to the page here once I have made it, give me a little time to do that and in case you change anything in the meantime (in your above post) please be so kind to write that here in the topic so I do not miss it ;-)

Does google search spoilers too? I suppose it does... lol. Feel free to use this draft, as there's not much else I can think of to add. OP updated with the draft.

Yes, bots crawl the html and as such ignore the fact wether or not text is visible on a first pageview. It simply "sees" all which is part of the html.

I will get back to you once I have added this. Than you can also start a new topic which we will use as our new support topic regarding addon/mod install and usage. :-)

Fixed a couple of typos. I like how it uses less than 10 lines with the spoilers. I wish my house was this tidy. *ROFL*

Like everything I have to do it took some time but here is the article page:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=29755

I have changed the info which I add to the downloadpages as well, for example here:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=29663

When you have any other suggestions let me know and if you want to start a new Guide On Installing Mods thread which people can use to ask all installation related questions let me know :-)
If not I think we update the existing one.
